Which TV presenters and general cultural commentators active at the moment do you like or dislike? And why?

I liked the Popworld presenters, and dislike Russel Brand. Alas, I am not sure why...

High at the top of my list, and sadly unavailable in the UK is George Stromboulopoulous, ex-Much Music presenter and current host of CBC's The Hour.

Much of what he has to say is already stuff that I'm familiar with, but I really enjoy the way that he capitalises on his prior MTVesque image and intoduces news, politics and current affairs in a way that is highly accessible to all and well directed at the teen to thirties demographic. It's good to see a news broadcaster deconstruct and personalise reporting and interviewing for a group who are typically alienated from the affairs of the day. Kind of reminds me of John Craven in a way.

John Craven used to be cool as well. Probably still is.

The popworld presenters? Isn't that the geeky-looking guy and the girl that always looks really tired?

I think that instead of a thread that lists random celebs, we should use our imaginations to make them fight to the death, or perhaps decide who could win an endurance test to the centre of the earth (and back!!1!) based on totally meaningless arbitrary reasons, like whoever has the best taste in hats. Or, take it to where it really matters - Who's better in teh sack, Rosie or Starr? That's what the people want!

I know!!! Lets just list everyperson in the whole world ever, right here in this thread. Yeah!

Or not.

I like Alan Moore,he should be given his own half-hourly topical talk show, but with noaudience, just him talking to camera about whatever he wats to talk about. That would rock, igneous style.

I don't like the cast of Hollyoaks.

I could start a whole thread about Hollyoaks! It's been alternately infuriating and entrancing me since I was about 10.

I find that some of the characters in Hollyoaks are far too nice (-er than they would be in real life, especially the "Lads") and some of them are unrealistically twisted (i.e. everyone is a honey-child or a rapist). I guess it's hard to write realistic characters for a pre-watershed show, as they can't swear. You'd be surprised how much of life is wrapped up in swearing.

On the other hand, the show does try to tackle some issues, and although it's hamfisted it was good to see a self-harming character with body issues work through that on a teen drama show, even if that was slightly scuppered by the fact that she and the other female cast members went on to appear in Loaded which is hardly pro-feminist There's also a transvestite in it now. I think sometimes these positives are overlooked by people looking for something to hate on.

Indeed, I once spoke to someone who said that The Good Life was a better show than HO because it had better "morals". No, I said. Hollyoaks is a better show in spite of The Good Life's morals. The Good Life probably put self-sufficiency and the adoption of left-wing politics in Britain back by about a hundred years simply by force of smug.

In summary, when Hollyoaks is bad it's usually endearingly crap in a British way, which, like Ganesh possibly, I prefer to stuff like the OC which is "throw-vase-at-TV" trite to my peepers.

As for the cast...well first of all blah blah my firend dram a school Lee Otway dirty bugger blah blah, but also everyone round here knows at least one of them, and they're supposed to be roughly 50/50 alrights/dickshites.

Oh, I like Charlotte Church as well. Oh, I like Charlotte Church: a swell!

Favorite TV personalities at the moment: all the Mythbusters. (Especially Signor Belleci.) They're funny, down to earth, and make science cool.

Least favorite: a slightly robotic Heidi Klum on Project Runway.

But Kali, how can you hate her? Her stoic expression when she tells people they are Auf could freeze Santa's heart!

Oh, I thought I mention

Liam Halligan again, economics correspondent for C4 News, because I have yet to inspire a frenzy of barbe-enthusiasm for the miracle that is Liam’s Hair. But then I went and googled, in order to find a few more pictures of said hair, and found - arghh! - this:

...along with his boast that he’s well-known for his "natural" delivery and "street-wise" analysis. Well, I’ve never noticed that, particularly, but then I’m not sure I can actually remember anything he’s ever said, either. He might be doing that fingerquotes-thing all the time, and I’d never have known. I do like watching his hair, though. Telly execs should send him somewhere on one of those ‘Holiday’ programmes. Somewhere that’s just a bit windy, but not too much.

What is a "Mythbuster"?

It's a TV show where they bust myths. Scientific as opposed to social, unfortunately. Actually, there's a good idea for a TV show...

Hmm. Are there any TV perps you dislike, Fly?

Here you go, Flyboy. This'll explain it.
