Getting some new RAM for the site...

The main reason, it transpires, why this site gets so slow and clumsy is people spamming or hitting the server really hard. So as a consequence I've decided to get another $200 worth of RAM for the server, which hopefully will speed everything up substantially. Fingers crossed.

How are Barbelith's finances looking these days, Tom? Are the Google Ads helping?

Yeah, I mean it's pretty much self-sustaining. I probably - even with this $200 thing going on - have made a profit this year of something roughly around $5 a month. So that's ... you know ... a suitable rate for the work I put in. > grin <

If people could let me know if the site feels any faster and more responsive, that would be great - and also if things get really slow, let me know quickly so I can work out why.

Yes, it's faster -- often I'll open several threads at once in different tabs and watch them clock and clock until something snaps and they all load up at once.

Not so today.

Yes, it certainly seems faster- and I've been on for about four hours with no squirrel problems at all, which is something of a record.

Yay for Tom! Oh, and be sure to let us know if the finance situation changes.

Very fast. Uncannily fast. I am not used to pushing "post reply" then not waiting five minutes to see it on the thread.

It is really a lot better. It's like walking on my socks in a recently waxed tile-floor.

Very fast. Uncannily fast. I am not used to pushing "post reply" then not waiting five minutes to see it on the thread.

Me too, I am now devoid of my angst fix of "did I post utter rubbish of poor grammatical contruct there or not".

I have no angst fix, but I'm increasingly freaked out by the short space of time in post-posting post appearance.

It is a bit scary, isn't it?

It's weird. I clicked on the PMs box this afternoon, and commenced rolling a cigarette, as is my usual habit. Before I'd even put the tobacco on the paper, the message had popped up!

'TIS WITCHERY, I TELL YOU.

In a tangental way, I think this will save on system load in a minor way, too, as fast-loading will probably cut down on the double-posts and resulting mod action dramatically. Not that it was ever a glut, but I'll betcha that the "did that really go through? Better click again." problem, especially with the short-attention-span multi-tab folks like myself, will disappear.

It's kind of akin to getting a broadband connection again. Thanks!

Flippin' 'eck, I didn't even notice how quickly the PM window appeared but it was soooo fast.

merci beaucoups, tom--my office system is so slow that it's kind of been a double whammy coming onto barbelith from there; now it's much more possible for me to procrastinate at work, as well as at home.

Yeah, cheers Tom it's definitely zippier since the upgrade. And it seems to have seen off the squirrels as well.
