Is it me or is the home page of the BBC News website really strange today, right now? Here, have a looksy at BBC world...

On the BBC today, as I type this, Banksy has pissed off Paris Hilton, Steve the Crocodile hunter has sadly been killed by a stingray and you can watch (well, you can watch something, anyway)... Then there's a suicide bomber killing five in Afhganistan and the Peace Keepers have have been told to leave Darfur...

It's no more or less an average day as I see it. Maybe I'm a tad cynical.

Actually I would quite like to see the AU forces replaced by UN forces, preferably with a very strong mandate to brook no nonsense whatsoever.

On the other side of the coin there was good news on the front page in the guise of improved standards in school meals and coverage of the final stage of the Tour of Britain.

Actually I was quite impressed by the near explicit approval given by spokespeople for HMV and Virgin for the Banksy stunt.

The only thing about the Steve Irwin news that freaked me out this morning was that last night I had a dream where I was walking on Hampstead Heath with a mate, and he was telling me about the time he was chased by crocodiles down Hampstead Heath river (Hampstead Heath doesn't actually have a river, but that's dream logic for you). And then this morning I saw the headline. Crocodiles don't often appear in my dreams, so that was an odd little bit of confluence ( in my life, I have had several dreams about alligators, though).

I bet those Banksy CDs go for a fortune on eBay -- he's probably helped Paris Hilton sell even more, since her album's been slated in all the reviews...

I've been internet less for a while as I wait for Talk Talk to get their Act Act together (end of this month, apparently), so been getting news in odd ways - like newspapers on the tube, the Economist, C4 etc.

I have noticed something that has happened of late, I have lost my heart for conspiracies - I think that twin towers one killed it in me - I just think that people are stupid and thoughtless and careless and dangerous when they want to be, and conspiracies always seem a bit too clever for their likes. That's what reading the news will do to you though.

You're right, Anna, the Banksy stamp can add value to almost anything. No matter how crap it is. That's one of he reasons I like hir work, conceptually. It's almost like Duchamp's "Fountain", innit?

Oh and don't worry too much about the crocodiles*, there's another famous Aussie** who'll save us all from the animals, and he'll even throw in more free arse-wipe and a load more numb bums and brains in the process. (Benny the Ball, I getcha. )

*I also get the being chased by meanies type dream, a lot. Even when I bloody realise it's a dream in my dream, I'm still powerless. It's like playing chess with myself, and I'm crap at chess.

**No offence or dsirespect meant to Steve Irwin, his family and loved ones, and / or my Aussie bredrin, of course. But that other Aussie fella can lick my stinky boots. Scumbag.

Well, no—but somehow I'm not as broken-hearted as I would've been if it had been, I dunno, cancer, or a bus crash or something. D'you know what I mean? It would have been Wrong, in some cosmic sense, for a man as reckless and adventurous as Steve Irwin to die in his bed.

He died as he lived, and his death had a certain degree of appropriateness and style.

Yeah, kind of like Rod Hull.

Seriously though, I did actually quite like his enthusiasm and how kids seemed to pick up on it. Through my limited TV goggles, they also seem to have a really nice team at his wildlife park / zoo thingy, which is a partial reflection of him as a boss, I suppose. Indeed, I'll miss him being all keen and pumped up about animals and preservation. 'Tis said. And he has a wife and kids to, eh? Very said. But then, I suppose they all knew the risks in what he was doing, so... Still, sad.

Sunday's news was odd.

The story about the possible terrorist training school, which is now a small muslim school, is where my sister used to go, as it was Legat Ballet School.

The local MP, who they had speaking about how terrible it is, was called Charles Hendry. My father's name.

I'm finding it extremely difficult to process that information, I don't think my brain has a file for it to go in. I tried to put it in 'mind boggling stupidity' but even that file rejected it.

Dead stingrays with their tails cut off have been found in Australia, sparking concern that fans of naturalist Steve Irwin may be avenging his death.

I guess every Capitain Ahab has the Moby Dick that their souls and minds can handle, huh?

"Hi, Ishmael. Please, don't call me Crickey..."

So.... Attacking stingrays for revenge, eh? Whatever next? The Skate better start scraping away some sand-traps, before the humans invade and teach them how to surf.

Humans are such fucking dumb animals sometimes, eh?

Sheesh! And I felt bad for voting "yes" with a friend recently on a BBC NEWS webpage poll about whether or not "we" would watch the footage if it was shown.

By the way, has anybody else researched about the Stingray's so called "aggression"?

The wiki Stingray Aggression entry states:

"Dasyatids generally do not attack aggressively or even actively defend themselves. When threatened, their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up. This attack is normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks.

Humans are usually stung in the foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung by brushing against the stinger. The stinger may break off, which is non-fatal to the stingray, and will be regrown. Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain and swelling from the venom, and possible infection from parts of the stinger left in the wound. Injuries to humans include, but are not limited to: poisoning, punctures, severed arteries and possible death.

Fatal stings, such as that which killed Australian naturalist and television personality Steve Irwin in September 2006, are extremely rare. Up to 1996, worldwide known deaths from stingray barb injuries numbered 17."

So, what was Steve Irwin up to? Was he trying to save it?

We should know, right? At least, for the sake of future peaceful coexistence betwen humans and Batoidea.

That report too made me exclaim.

As I understand it, the man was snorkelling above the ray, and - a cameraman ahead of it - the beast felt itself cornered, and, upon turning to flee, flicked its tail upwards.

I was discussing this with a (diving enthusiast) friend today. She felt it was a tragic accident, but was eager to see the footage. Not out of morbid fascination, but rather interest in the sea-creature.

Ray is a tasty fish.

Forgive my excessive floridity - gin and Deadwood season 2 are to blame.

What's annoying me at the moment? That one of the senior Police officers in charge of 'tactical delivery' (?) during the De Menezes killing, has been promoted. Makes me wonder about that point at which coincidence or incompetence become conspiracy fodder...

Did that actually happen?
There's an article about it on the BBC.
Seems it was some graffiti.. but now become an urban legend.
