Original Artwork

When I visited my favourite comics shop today, the shop man and I got to talking, and as I told him I had bought some Fantagraphics artists original artwork in 1995, and especially mentioned Daniel Clowes´ cover artwork for Like a velvet glove..., he said it could be worth 20 times as much today, with Clowes´ third movie being made and his fame having increased since then.

We then discussed how I could sell it, if I would, what I do with it anyway (collects dust with the other art on my cupboard).

And I thought, let´s hear/see what experiences my fellow Barbeloids have with original comics artwork.

What artwork do you have? What do you do with it? When and where did you get it? For example, I was too shy to talk to Clowes but had no such problems with Peter Bagge (maybe because he´s so frail and one head shorter than me ).

heh. I'd just decided to buy some original artwork, and was really enjoying the process of deciding what to pick up, whether to go with some hot Cameron Stewart action or uninked Mike Wieringo or even some lesser page from New Frontier. Whatever I got, I figured I'd frame it and proudly display it over my own drawing table. I figure the point of owning it is to look at it and let others do the same, not to treat it as an investment...

... and then I got a speeding ticket while in rural Minnesota, soaking up all of my free cash. So the Lac Qui Parle County Treasurer has my original art, sort of (and I had just about settled on the Stewart).

I've got some framed & numbered Bob Burden stuff -- my better half had tried ordering a T-shirt from his site, they were out, and the two of them began an email correspondence, which I found both stunning and sweet once I discovered it.

The pictures are fun, too.

I picked up a page of Luther Arkwright at the Brighton con direct from Bryan Talbot, and it's hanging on the wall in my living room between a couple of McCarthy 2000ad centrespreads (Ripped from the comics sadly, not originals).

It's the page where Luther is shot (last page of part 1 I think), and was a measly £50. An absolute bargain, and a great way to spend my work bonus!

My favourite one is a drawing Jim Woodring did of my "soul". The deal was, he gets 20 DM and a photo, and the picture inspires him to draw one of his concentric spindle soul shapes, that represents your soul.

I've got the "mysteries of the gullitine" page from Jill Thompson's first run on the Invisibles. Twenty bucks at the time. I keep it framed and on my wall, though so it doesn't collect much dust.

I've got one of those, too! It's ace. Plus, I had ordered some t-shirts from him, and he sent a few other little original bits. My favorite is this small postcard size drawing of a Woodring style house and some tree branches in the foreground. Really lovely.

The other piece of original comic art I have is a Bryan Hitch/Paul Neary page from Warren Ellis's run on The Authority. I had it framed archival quality and it hangs in my dining room out of direct sunlight.

I'm a big believer in buying original art of all types and displaying it. Outside of comics art, everything else on my walls is an original of some sort. It's fun buying this stuff, and supporting smaller artists.
