Outkast - Idlewild

So... There have been, by my count, four threads on Outkast previously (a couple of which are twice or thrice-posted), which can be found here, and here, and finally here, but I think Idlewild deserves a special mention for now.

The thread over in FT&T can be found here, also, but it hasn't progressed yet, because... well... The film isn't out yet!

Which makes the fact that the soundtrack arrived in the shops yesterday rather impressive to me (at least until I found out that apparently it was leaked nine days ago. Oops). The film has been 'wrapped' according to IMDB, but is apparently sitting, waiting for the right release date. Then again, I wouldn't want to have gone up against Superman returns.

Enough preamble, however - the album is great. Contributors include Sleepy Brown, Khujo Goodie, Scar, Snoop Dog, Janelle MonĂ¡e, Killer Mike and... well... Macy Gray (who plays 'Taffy' in the film). The interludes are good, including one called 'No Bootleg DVDs', and the production is seamless for the most part.

For my money, though, the first half an hour or so is more difficult to get into - I'm not a hardcore dyed-in-the-wool Outkast fan, but even so the hillside curve in the album felt to me to peak a around "Hollywood Divorce", then get right into it's stride from thereon in. The last song, also, seems to go on, honestly, forever, although it's to your taste whether this is a good thing or a bad thing.

Anyway - has anyone else out there picked this up?

I've only listened to the first half and what I can tell, it's great. I thought it was going to be some sort of high concept, lots going on, too much everything, but it sounds like a classic Outkast album. The song N2U, with its great hook and declaration of noncommittment, is an outstanding conventional hiphop song. However, put against the song that comes before it... well you have a different story altogether.

I'm going to come back with some thoughts when I've digested the whole album.

I'm also very interested to hear what our resident hiphop/rap/Outkast fans here on the 'lith have to say about the new album.

Also, what Flyboy and/or Flux thinks of the album.

I'm listening to the album right now for the second time and really enjoying it. I think it got a bit of a critical bashing because it is less cohesive than Stankonia, and less ambitious than Speakerboxx/Love Below, but on its own terms, there's some great stuff. 'Morris Brown' and 'PJ & Rooster' are the highlights. There are a few clunkers, but I actually really like 'A Bad Note,' which got bashed in nearly every review I read.
