I was reading Overcompensating, one of my favorite web comics, when author Jeff Rowland decided to put forth his two cents re: Joe Francis.
There was a link to an article about this guy Francis. Didn't cast him in a very good light. Most surprising part: someone apparently snuck into his mansion with a video camera and, well, just read the article.
If you don't know who he is, then you probably don't live in the states or watch television past 2:00am. Girls Gone Wild! is essentially DVDs of young, mostly drunk women revealing their breasts and making out with their friends on camera for t-shirts or hats or whatever cheap crap they're giving away that night. Also there's some fairly hardcore porn thrown in for good measure (or so I've heard, I've never actually watched one).
I don't know what to think about Girls Gone Wild. I can appreciate getting drunk and runnin' around nekkid, I mean that's a part of a lot of peoples's spring break memories (mine, anyway), and it's not as if the girls aren't aware that they are being filmed (they are asked to sign a waiver anyway). Some have claimed it feels liberating to flash a camera. I don't have a hard time believing it.
But doens't take a genius to realize that there are going to be problems. The article linked to above speaks of a few. Exploitation? Probably, yeah. Not hard to picture. Rape charges too, and when there's that much alcohol around it's going to be a mess, and I for one don't trust Joe Fuckin' Francis to be a responsible fella.
But he's being hailed as the "Next Hugh Hefner" (rumors abound that he is likely to purchase Playboy once the old man finally croaks), which is taken by many to be a compliment. I personally don't have any problems with Heff.
Anyway. I'm in a hurry here, so the basic question is: Joe Francis, Douchebag Supreme or successful and enterprising young man who also happens to be a jerk? Young drunk women flashing a camera: liberating or explotative? Both? |
