Ever get annoyed at a poster? Sometimes, are word just not enough? Would you like to shoot someone in the face? Well, I think we should, through the medium of computerised deathmatching. Anyone in?

There are a bunch of really great multiplayer fps games around nowadays, and from reading this forum, lots of our most prominent members seem to have some pretty mad skills. we should use this thread to co-ordinate games and discuss what games and what times at what servers we can meet up and mess each other up.

Personally, I'd love to have a game of Counterstrike: Source or F.E.A.R with you lot, but there's other games like Enemy Territory, the Quake games, Unreal Tourney 2004, Painkiller... the list goes on.

We could arrange a day and time, choose a game we all have, and search for an empty server with a low ping for most of us. Most game servers are sadly empty for most games these days, it'd be easy to find a low pinging server that's empty in the London area, for example.

So, anyone want in?

My good sir, that sounds down right delicious.

I'm awfuly fond of Tribes (any of 'em, but I suppose Vengeance for the newfangledness of it) but I'd be up for a round of just about anything. Except Halo.

Sign me up for CS:S or UT2004 (ChaosUT!). A bit of the Onslaught gametype wouldn't go amiss. Hell, even Quake 1 or 2....

Seconded - Halo's kinda lousy next to most other FPS out there.

UT2004 would be ace... my fave DM is F.E.A.R., but last time I tried to play it didn't work. Not sure where the problem was...

Mind you, I'm not very good, so choice of game for me really only alters a) whether I have to spend any money first and b) what my last sight will be before someone frags me in the face.

But yeah, count me in.

Sounds like good, clean, wholesome destruction to me... I'd be happy to join in (and host a server, should the need arise). I've also got access to a Teamspeak server, if sharing with a bunch of geeks in the middle of a Zul Grub run isn't too much of a terrifying prospect.

I've not tried the new FEAR deathmatch, but would be happy to. Alternatively anything on steam (The Ship is good, if you like slightly more cerebral games), UT2k4 would suit well.

I can see something greater coming out of this, though. A new Barbelith code of chivalry.

"Sir, you have offended my honor. I demand satisfaction. CS or Instagib?"

Count me in, too!

CS:S is the only game on the list that I can play online, but as far as onliners go it's a goody!

Please be warned - I'm crap at it, though.

Could I put in a vote for HL2DM? Mind you, I'm so bad at that that it would be probably as well to play CS:S, which I have never played...

HL2DM is great fun, though I find I'm rather vulnerable when laughing too much from killing some poor unfortunate with a well-placed toilet.

I don't see why we can't try a few games out, everything on Steam's pretty easy to set up, as is UT. Would we cover the basics if we went for CS:S, HL2DM and UT2k4 as starters? Try FEAR later on if the easy-to-make-work games go alright? Anyone want to suggest a time? Will I be able to corrupt anyone to playing iCTF, too? (Sorry, this post is getting rather too much like the end of Dangermouse. I'll end it now).

My PC has a problem with the Source engine. I don't know what it is, but I still can't play ANY of the Source games on it. Which sucks, really.

I have UT2004 and could re-install it, but I'm not in a position to invest shekels in anything else. Time difference might count me out of the merriment anyway.

I'd be up for HL2DM and CS:S. If anybody has Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War I'd be willing to take y'all to school. Also, I think Civilization 4, one of my favorite games of the moment, may have some kind of multiplayer mode, and it exercises the mind instead of the beat-a-man-to-death-with-indoor-plumbing gland.

I could be interested in some DoW too... though I'm not sure I could handle games of Civ, they tend to last days!

It sounds like UT2k4 is something everyone can play... has everyone got that?

Stoatie - Updated your graphics, sound, and chipset drivers?

I'd be happy to face you all on the field of honor, gravity gun in hand. HL2DM is the only multiplayer I've got right now. Well, that and Tron 2.0 and Postal 2, but I doubt anyone else has either of those. Post the time and location and I'll be happy to join in the slaughter. Because you can't have "slaughter" without "laughter".

nameinuse- yep, all drivers up to date... and my machine is WAY over the required spec. It'll usually play HL2 for about four or five minutes before crashing the whole PC.

Otherwise what free stuff could we use?

LOYALIST SCUM!!!

Ahem. To answer your question Invisible Al, yes, if you have HL2 with a real Steam account then HL2DM, and Counter-Strike Source, will have downloaded. Open up your Steam thingy, which probably loads up when you start windows, go to My Games and check the list of games there.

I'd definitely be up for DoW, although I haven't played it for ages since WoW (get my excuses in early..). Otherwise I've played Alpha Centurai with Tez before if anyone else is up for that.

As for FPS, I only really play Halo on the Xbox.

I have DoW, but not Winter Assault. And I suck on ice, so I'd have to be propped up by a decent teammate.

FEAR: Combat was made available last week for FREE from www.joinfear.com

We had a LAN party this weekend and this was the breakout hit of the thing.

Basically it is the FEAR deathmatch but with more maps, a ton of game styles and FREE.

FOR THE DARK GODS!!!

By which I mean, as an aside for Dawn of War players, have any of you noticed that the armies in Dawn of War and Winter Assault are pretty badly imbalanced? I've got a pretty decent grasp of tactics for all armies, but I find if I'm playing as Space Marines in skirmish mode I can win much quicker and easier than I can with Chaos Space Marines (my second choice), Imperial Guard (third), Eldar (fourth) or Orks (absolute last place). Their basic units are fairly poweful- Marines can take down light and heavy infantry and vehicles with ease, and although Skimmers and Rhinos are next to useless Dreadnoughts and Hellfire Dreadnoughts are extremely powerful anti-infantry and anti-vehicle support until the enemy starts using Chaos Predators, Looted Lemun Russ tanks and Falcons, by which time you're using Terminators, Predators and a Land-Raider anyway. So if we're playing DOW maybe we ought to either avoid Marines altogether or have balanced team games (say one side is a Marine army and two Imperial Guard versus three Eldar or Ork armies).

I think the DoW balance problems stem from trying to keep it close to the tabletop game.

Sure a marine is pretty tough, but for each marine you buy I could buy almost a squad of Imperial Inf.

of course I am a HUGE 40k dork and never play marines, so I could just be jealous of their awesome powers :-P

Strangely, HL2 now appears to be working fine. I reinstalled my drivers- but I've done that several times since it last didn't work to no avail. Today, however, it seems peachy. So I'd be up for HL2 or Counterstrike, as well as anything I already said.

I can set up a server tomorrow (monday, 28th) night (around 9pm EST). The only question is which game (if I'm setting it up, it's either CS:S, HL2DM or UT2004). Server name will be "Barbelith Disaster Area". Votes/suggestions welcome.

In any case, any servers I set up will start w/the name "Barbelith", hopefully to make them easier to find. I'll have more info (like an IP, hopefully) after I do a few tests tonight.

Again, suggestions are welcome, as well as any useful info - it's been a while since I've done this.

I won't be able to log on for a couple of weeks*, but I have a suggestion: Everybody plays under their suit name from teh Barb', because it's not shooting a 'lither in the face unless we're shooting a 'lither in the face, dig?

* Mark it in your calenders as 'Pwnsday'. You may want to schedule a therapy session for immediately after.

I tried FEAR Combat in DM mode last night, and it's smooth but frustrating -- I've never played the core game, and while it's basically just another FPS interface, I basically wandered around not knowing how to do anything and getting shot in the face by 13-year-old kids doing dive rolls and one-shot-one-kill manouvres.

I suck at twitch-reflex games... my favourite UT2004 mode is Onslaught, because team-based games let the reflexively gifted take pole position and I can have a lot of fun supporting the wunderkind.

Kind of offtopic (well, totally, really), but MattShepherd- you really should play the F.E.A.R. singleplayer game (saw it in Game today for fiteen quid). It's a little repetitive (nowhere near as much as Halo, though, and inexplicably everyone LOVED that), but it's the most intense FPS fun I've ever had. The AI is the best I've ever seen- remember when you first played the original Half-Life and were utterly gobsmacked by the AI? It's like that. Only, y'know, NOW. And still as gobsmacking.

I'm in. Well...

Afraid I'm one of those mac users, see. And I used to game a lot on my pc, but I haven't really played since the days of Q3 and Rainbow Six. I've tended to stick to console games and play the odd bit (read - weeks on end) of Total War on my Love's pc, then used a mac for normal computy stuff...

BUT! I just got a shiny shiny pretty MacBook! And it runs XP! W00t! So I'm back on the pc games!

BUT! At the moment I've only got 512meg of RAM, and the graphics card is a pretty woeful 65meg of VRAM (though some reports are saying it's actually sorta okay for gaming).

I'm downloading the FEAR multiplayer pack, and will see how that plays on my comp, and I'll try to get hold of a copy of UT2004 and give it a bash.

SO! What I'm getting at is - I want in, but I'll probably be limited to a few older games. Hopefully once I get the funds together for a RAM upgrade, things'll work better. Is anyone up for a bit of old-skool action? Do people still play Q3? What mid-range games can people recommend?

Jeez, it's been a while...

I WANNA BLOW SHIT UP!!!!

An update on my comp -

FEAR didn't seem to work. The install .exe wouldn't even run, so I can't be certain that it won't work at all, but I'm pretty far below the requirements so...

I think HL2 is pretty definitely out of my range, but I might just try an install of my housemate's copy if i'm feeling a bit masochistic later today...

However - Enemy Territory runs fine on my comp and though I suck worse than a Dyson at it, I'm finding it to be very enjoyable. I need lots of practice though.

I also just installed UT2004, which is running fine as well. I'll check out the online play in a bit, though I can't see why it wouldn't work.

So I'm up for having my face blasted off in those games if anyone's up for it?

A copy of DoW is heading my way too, so I'll be up for a blast on that soon, too.

As an aside - Has anybody played Silk Road Online? I downloaded the client, but there seem to be some kind of driver issues going on which mean I can't actually play the damn thing. Is it actually any good, or am I better off saving my time trying to get a better game working? (Damn motherfucking windoze etc etc...)

SHOOT ME!!!

Since I can't seem to properly plan a time for gaming, I'd recommend a common name for floating game servers. I only plan to turn mine on for UT2004 at random intervals, named:
Barbe-Deathmatch

more info when I figure out what I'm doing.

Hah. I started this thread and then forgot all about it. Oops.

Anyway, I've recently made a purchase of a nintendo ds, metroid prime and a wifi dongle. Would anyone fancy a game over the weekend? Mostly likely sunday afternoon, British time.

If you are, post your friend codes for the game here. We can use these to set up a game (and maybe even try some of that voice chat shit as well). My code is 0816 8660 7658.

Hopefully I will see some of you in the handheld killing fields soon.
