Where do you stop with these evil cats...?

I've just saved a mouse for the second time tonight and started to think about it...

Earlier on, my cat came back with a "very" small mouse and was playing about with it... This is something i've gotten used to of late... She does it all the time and I think that's just natures way isn't it...

However, a while ago I noticed the mouse was spent and my cat was just prodding it for fun... I decided my cat had had it's fun and now as the "responsible" monkey I should step in and save the mouse... (my cat has recently taken to eating them and then being extremely sick)...

Anyway, the mouse was so exhausted that I could actually pick it up and place it in the bucket i'd found to catch it in... I was amazing that I could even stroke this wild animal before I placed it in the oposite neighbours garden... It actually strucggled onto my hand and then the wall I was trying to make it go for... It then managed to "jump" onto a leaf and scuttle down the bush off and away... Lot's of people are scared of them but they are really lovely, sweet creatures at the end of the day... Well, this one was...

So I'd done a good deed yeah...?

Nope... My cat came in about 30mins later with the same mouse... I can't be sure it was the same but it was the exact same size and the way it moved after I decided I needed to free this little fella for the second time and the way it struggled to grab onto my fingures told me it was the same one...

I gave it a second chance and this time took it 3 streets down before tipping it onto my hand and letting it go for the second time...

My cat catches these things all the time... I wonder why this one got such respect from me...? She's pretty pissed off about my actions by the way but so far hasn't come back with him again...

Good luck to the little fella I say...

I always find it creepy when I watch my cat play with a live mouse or other living creature, using exactly the same set of physical actions and behaviours that I find so cute when he is playing with a stick that I am dragging about for him or any other toy. It is hard to reconcile the hunting nature with the cute fluffy purry creature who keeps my lap warm and sits in the sun with me. But I rather like the conceptual challenge, even though I do feel sad when he kills some hapless creature. I think if I lived in the country where he could potentially kill something rare, rather than in the city where all his game are creatures that have found a way to thrive in the environment we humans have created, then I would have to think about finding a new home for him.

Well, she came back, looked at me in an annoyed way, and went off into the corridor... She didn't find it so maybe the little fella will live to get into someones house and cause an infestation problem... Just glad he/she lived...

Not all cats are like that.

My ex´s cat was not very well connected with her ancient roots, probably because of the good life that is the comfort of the pampered housecat.

She too once found a mouse and placed it and her cat in the bathtub so they could get acquainted. Her cat wery boredly played and pawed a bit with the mouse for a while but obviously didn´t know what to do with it, so she then set the mouse free again.
