A spiritual problem with cell phones

THIS is TRUE for 28 October 2001

WHO YA GONNA CALL? British ghost "expert" Tony Cornell says sightings of ghosts have declined in past years, and he thinks he knows why. "Until three years ago we'd receive reports of two new ghosts every week," Cornell says. "But with the introduction of mobile phones 15 years ago, ghost sightings began to decline to the point where now we are receiving none." He says electronic fields from wireless phone calls and text messages are killing the spirits.

So where is his explanation for how exactly this works? If ghosts are in fact a manifestation of energy, the classical opinion is that they are on a frequency that is pass the top of the physical spectrum -- cell phone frequencies do not come near that. So, cell phones operate on a frequency of only a few gigahertz, right? Right. Besides, if this is so, gamma radiation would be much more dangerous, what with being on a higher frequency and all.

Of course by this guy's logic it could be Pokemon or Internet pr0n that is killing all the poor little ghosts. He is basically equivocating two events that happened within the same timeframe, without any evidance and whatnot.

So.

He is silly.

Oh, per-leeeeze. I'd like to give all the people who come out with guff like this a GCSE physics textbook (and a thick ear).

Makes no sense from a physics point of view. From the mystic/poetical point of view, it makes perfect sense. Of course cell phones destroy the spirits of your beloved departed. They also give fairies epileptic fits and set angels on fire.

For my money, the ghosts have all fucked off to the netherworld to hide until the living realize that cycling endlessly thru your ringtones in public is neither big nor clever.

some people have posited that electromagnetic energies let out by faultlines the earth interact with humans to create the perception of paranormal events. what some people have called the earth lights hypothesis. Persinger's experiments with stimulating the temporal lobe electromagnetically seems to bear this out. perhaps the cell phones affect our brains and so our ability to experience paranormality.

see Electric UFOs by Albert Budden for the longest study of this. (haven't read it though from a glance it looks like he believes that artificial power lines more than natural causes make this happen. author takes more a science than a fringe science perspective.)

BTW I grew up in a town near a faultline and a documented history of UFO's and ghosts so this probably biases me in a big way

If the phone using fucks can't notice the other cars on the road how in the hell are they going to notice ghosts?

That's and interesting point, Ria. But woundn't an increase in electromagnetic radiation mean more "paranormal" experiences rather thatn less?

Dunno if mobiles are 'ghostbusters.'

But as far as phenomena go, mobiles are pretty strange... walking down the road talking to someone who isn't there is a reasonably odd thing to do.
