Maybe Dick had good reasons to be paranoid?

Greetings,

My name is The Cosmic Walrus, and since this is my first post, I'd like to introduce myself, briefly. Barbelith was introduced to me my a good friend of mine who discovered it after I introduced him to Grant Morrison and The Invisibles. I've been hooked on "The Temple" ever since. I look forward to conversing with all of you.

I'd like to bring to your attention an interesting set of documents I've come across recently while researching the scifi author Philip K. Dick. Dick is an extremely interesting character, and as most of you undoubtedly know, had a series of mystical experiences and became increasingly eccentric before his death. What I have come across is a series of letters Dick wrote to the FBI well before his mystical experiences, (he called them "2-3-74" for Feb/Mar of '74) or eccentric behaviour. Apparently according to the letters, Dick was approached a shady character that tried to coerce him to insert "coded information" into his novels, which he outright refused to do. Here is an excerpt:

"Gentlemen:

I am a well-known author of science fiction novels, one of which dealt with Nazi Germany (called MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, it described an "alternate world" in which the Germans and Japanese won World War Two and jointly occupied the United States). This novel, published in 1962 by Putnam & Co., won the Hugo Award for Best Novel of the Year and hence was widely read both here and abroad; for example, a Japanese edition printed in Tokio (sic) ran into several editions. I bring this to your attention because several months ago I was approached by an individual who I have reason to believe belonged to a covert organization involving politics, illegal weapons, etc., who put great pressure on me to place coded information in future novels "to be read by the right people here and there," as he phrased it. I refused to do this."

An interesting read to be sure, and also the site which the letters is hosted on has some interesting Dick information as well. (http://www.alphane.com/moon/PalmTree/index.htm)

Goodluck and Godspeed,

Holy shit!

I hope only to live long enough to see the truth revealed.

Oh, hang on...

FUCKED ON DRUGS.

Well, that seems to have sorted that one out.

Yeah, notice the similarities between Dick's accusations and those of his character Barris in 'A Scanner Darkly'. Seems to me that Dick had a moment of clarity a little while later and incorporated one of his 'funny turns' into 'Scanner. He does that a lot.

Incidentally- I'm in the middle of writing a dissertation on postmodern themes in Dick's VALIS trilogy, so if anybody knows of any good online resources on these books, the more academic the better, then PM me or post them in this thread.

I think the edition of VALIS I read had either a preface or an afterword written by Dick (or possibly a Dick scholar) talking about how he was always aware that he could simply be losing his mind. In other words, he was constantly evaluating his experiences in terms of "Is this a symptom of madness, or an actual external effect?"

Just in case you're not reading that edition, it'd be useful.

Love to read that once it's finished...

I second that, Phex.

Here's a speech that Dick gave to I believe a university, where he explains a good deal of his 2-3-74 experiences himself and where he believes they came from. He also explains several very unlikely synchronicities he had while writing "Flow my tears, the policeman said", also before 2-3-74:

How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later

I definitely am acutely aware of the fact that Dick could just be another drugged out borderline schizophrenic/bipoloar/epileptic, but I also entertain the possibility that there may be something more as well. While I don't agree that the "empire never ended", and we're all living in a black iron prison, many of Dick's more mystical ideas (and he had alot of them) seem to potentially fit. I also say that it's entirely possible and I am intrigued by the possibility that Dick was in fact approached by whoever "Kinchen" was, and disturbed to the point that he fled to Canada (It probably wouldn't have taken much, hah).

But then again, he could just be crazy. If anyone can remember, Dick had a name for his own possibility that he might be crazy...I think he called it the "lowest possible outcome" or something like that, which out of his endless theories and hypothesis, that would be that he was just crazy and imagining things...I tried to dig up the actual quote but left empty handed.

One thing I guess I should mention that may make me a bit more pliable to Dick's experiences than I used to be, is that I had a similar "spiritual" experience to Dick's 2-3-74 several months ago (minus the paranoia or drugs or fear thank god). Nowhere near the scale or scope of Dick's but my life definitely hasn't been the same since. Before that I was more or less a complete Atheist, so it was a bit of a change to get used to being a "spiritual" being. It's really what brought me to The Invisibles, and Barbelith, and even interest in PKD himself. When I get some time I'll post more details of that experience, but I just thought I'd mention it.

You misread one word in a thread title and it all just falls apart. I read it as -

Moby Dick had good reasons to be paranoid.

Well yeah, Ahab.

Well, I'm pretty sure that agents approached JFK - to give him a cup of coffee, deliver reports, like that. PKD on the other hand was apparently approached by the FBI, as a result of a correspondence with a Russian mathematician. This does not mean that the letters above are other than the actions of a man with mental health problems.
