I'm new here (after a fashion), and am curious as to the kinds of people that post on these boards.

Generally speaking, it's the dregs of society.

Not me. I'm the cream of the societal crop.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Thank you for the (occasionally bizarre) welcomes.

And for the record, I am not George W. Bush, though I have no way of proving that, of course.

You seem able to write coherently. That's proof enough for me.

Welcome.

I'll add a perfectly normal welcome.

I am known as entity. I am sometimes a macacque posing as a human, and sometimes a human posing as a macacque, but either way I am male. I used to be gender neutral, and my name, entitything, was chosen because of that. But now I have settled into being a man-type macacque.

I just realized that this somewhat belies my stated goal of offering a perfectly normal welcome, but I'll leave it as written in hopes of amusing you.

Thank you.

Can anyone tell me if there is a thread in which people list their favourite books in all genres? I've seen threads in which people discuss their favourite books on a specific subject or genre, or talk generally about what they are presently reading, but is there a thread in which many people list "the 100 greatest fiction (or non-fiction) books of all time", or something of that nature? And similar threads for films and comics? I'd like to obtain such recommendations without digging through dozens of different threads and forums scattered across different time periods.

That would be in the Books and Writing forum, which you'll find down there, in the pink, between the hotpink and the mauve.

non-mainstream

Ender, are you sure 'non-mainstream' would be in Goerge's vocabulary?

If there isn't such a thread, I'd suggest you start one immediately.

Barbelith's search function is borked, so the best means of finding what's been done where is to use google's site search function, thusly -

enter
site:barbelith.com "search term"
into google, substituting your search string for the parts in the quotation marks.

I exist only in your imagination. Any posts by me that you read on this forum are figments of your warped psyche.

As are any replies.

Thank you for the suggestions. I've run numerous searches, and haven't yet found threads like the ones I had in mind, but I'll wait a bit longer in case anyone wants to point out that such threads would be redundant.

I recommend starting a thread on the sort of thing you like and then people can suggest other things you might like that are similar.
Otherwise one in conversation to discuss the essential elements of pop culture every home should have.
Or we could all just throw suggestions at you here.
Watch Spaced! Read Y:The Last Man (comic) and Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones (book)!

Doubt that would work, if only because my reading habits have hitherto been rather conventional. Besides, it's everybody else's dissimilar reading material that I'm interested in. However, I'm in the process of creating a thread on the subject, and will take your suggestions into consideration.

I don't; never said it aloud. ; )

it goes may-trish-un.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

I thought it was kind of like that, only with a flat "a" at the beginning.

Char Aina
13:46 / 29.07.06
i did flirt with that, but i decided the less flowing slightly less comfortable 'may' sound is necessary to make the etymology clear.
the movie aint the matt-rix, y'ken?

i am open to further convincements, if you have any.

Ah, it's comfort over etymology for me every time.

But I'm just lazy.

your words speak of strong truth.
laziness is a virtue, oft ignored by the excitable and the energetic.
it is said a man should avoid such people, lest he wishes to command them on some boring enterprise not worthy of his getting out of bed.

i shall take your subtle convincements into consideration, friend.

until then let us not say this name aloud, lest we be judged fools by the foolish.

Since this is Conversation, check out this random funky thing: an address about history from Carl Becker, in 1931. I am inclined to excuse his language problems on the grounds that his grasp of cultural construction was demonstrably greater than Jeb Bush's is. Not hard, but maybe sweet.

Very interesting, especially in light of the book I just recommended...For those who are interested in discussing their favourite/greatest books of all time, I've started a thread on the subject:

What are the most important books of all time (to you)?
