A Fool's Errand...

When I was young, I was amongst the first citizens of the free world to get a Mac Classic II - oh, joy, black and white pixels replacing my old Amiga!

I've long since lost that computer, and by chance one day, I found a old Mac Classic II - complete with keyboards and so on. Oh, how I love hard waste day.

I've been rummaging through swap meets and forums and everywhere else for this game I used to play obsessively and never got to complete: The name is either a Fool's Errand, or A Fool's Journey - something like that, based on the first card of the tarot deck.

It was a really good puzzle game, from find-that-word to logic ones, and you had to complete every card's puzzle (the Major Arcana, that is), and in the end, you had to put together a puzzle that outlined the Fool's travelling.

Perhaps it was only my childhood perception, but I thought this was grouse. Anyone remember it, and any criticism, and (um) does anyone have this game?

Or, your favourite mac classic II game - flaunt it!

I don't have a copy, but I know where you can find one. For Windows and Mac these days. And theres a sequel. Also, don't miss 3-in-Three by the same author. I've not played The Fools Errand myself (I've only heard the frightened whispers), but I have played 3-in-Three, and it's a good workout for your brainmeat.

My favorite Apple II game was Conan:Hall of Volta. You play Conan, equipped with boomerang abttleaxes. Really, that's all I should have to say about it, if that hasn't piqued your interest... well, you might want to check for a pulse. I used to play this game obsessively back in the day, when my school district finally decided to spring for a computer lab. Sadly, no-one has ported it to Java the way so many old games have been.

I still have the old side-scroller Creepy Castle somewhere on my backup drive. Beyond needing classic (or 0S9) to run it, I think it also requires the display to run in 2-bit, which causes some mischief on modern computers. Great game though.

The game carried themes from the old monster movie classics and had a pretty funny soundtrack to it. The keyboard action was pretty quick and I remember it being quite difficult.

Wow... completely forgot about the Info-Mac Hyperarchive. You might be able to find a bunch old old things there. It was quite the popular nerd spot when people were moving from BBSs to the early internet.

Some games of note (but not necessarily there):

Flight Simulators:
Hellcats over the Pacific - fun WWII sim / could span over 3 monitors
F/A-18 Hornet - one of the best flight sims for pre-OSX machines

Arcade:
Spectre / Spectre Supreme - vector tank game / capture the flag
Shufflepuck Cafe - fun shuffleboard game from Broderbund

Adventure:
POD (Prince of Darkness) - old top down fantasy adventure game

I'll see if I can dig up any others when I catch up with the family. They might still have some of our old macintoshes about.
