HL2 and Prey Portals

HL2 episode 2 portal demo

The Prey mod portal demo

The one for HL2 looks a little dull at first but then it becomes more inventive and frantic until I went from "Oh?" to "Oh. Oh holy shit!" I love the different uses the developers found for the portals instead of just "get to point a without having to pass through b". (The way to gain extra air time on a jump, for example.)

The Prey mod isn't nearly as creative looking, but it gives you a hands-on feel (and actually had a player leap into an infinite-loop portal set-up and die a terrible death. Heh. Instant bottomless-pit).

Thoughts? I'm ecstatic about the delicious novelty of being able to master space in a new way, but will it become an FPS standard or pop up in a few games then fade away? (I have a feeling these portals will, if nothing else, sweep multiplayer in new and absolutely intimidating ways.)

I really like how these past couple of years the big "Ooohs" in videogames have been coming from things like HL2s gravity gun, Will Wright's "procedural development" in Spore, etc... There's only so much further we can go in terms of graphical quality and I'd rather see developers push the boundaries of their AI and physics engines for fresh or interesting gameplay. Hopefully ideas like these portal-guns will continue to spring up as a result.

It looks amazing and the best thing is, it'll be free along with HL2: episode 2.

Apparently it's based on a game called NarbacularDrop. Valve liked this game so much they hired the whole development team to do re-make it using the HL2 engine.

Btw I loved that trailer with the cool infographics and sinister voice over .

I'm really looking forward to portaling my enemies over cliffs in multiplayer.

I can't get over the looking through a portal and seeing *its POV*. I expect I'll sit there for hours moving slowly back and forth in front of my first portal, marveling.

Seriously though, you're able to *see yourself* in a FPS and not just using your visible gun as your sense of self. That has to be seen as breaking the fourth wall or something. Freaky.

(you can tell I think FPS character's are so me that I don't even like them having as much independence as Gordon Freeman)

Nedrichards - download that Narbucular Drop game linked above and prepare to wet your panties if you're after some portal action. I played it over the weekend and really enjoyed it. It's a simple little puzzler (that you can cheat the hell out of btw, hope they fix it for the HL2 version), but it's great fun figuring out how to use the game mechanic. Highly recommended for a freebie.
