Today in 1099, Christian soldiers of the first crusade take the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, supposedly the location of Golgotha. Through out the remainder of the crusade no crusader could consider his pilgrimage complete until he had prayed at the Holy Sepulchre. Indeed, Godfrey de Bouillon, first monarch of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, chose as his title not "king", but Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri, which means "Protector of the Holy Sepulchre", citing the church’s medieval importance. |
