Brain and Body: Symbiosis?

An idea I just heard:

That the brain and body are separate entities but need each other to live: The nerves are the brains roots in the body.

I just thought it sounded cool, but i bet there are holes in there a mile wide.

I believe mitochondria were origianlly separate entities that eventually became a part of us. My memory is bad. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Please don't make references to that... Luciferian... concept. *shivers*

I send it back to the Hell which hath spawned it. Away, Evil! In the name of the Lord, Away!

Yes on the mitochondria -- I think they've got their own RNA or something like that.

I suppose you could model any organ like the brain or whatever as a symbiotic organism -- but since they can't survive without the rest, it's no good placing one as more important than the other.
What's the difference between having the brain separate from the body and having the liver separate from the body?
How do you know your consciousness isn't present in your liver?

<threadrot> Did anyone else automatically think "orgone" when the midichlorians were described in the Phantom Menace? Suddenly lightsabers made a lot more sense... </threadrot>
