Wimbledon: J'accuse!

Because Haus kinda demanded it, a thread for spleen-ventage against one of the sports more annoying and pointless than footy...

I must say the BBC outdid itself with the pre-Wimbledon ads this year with people getting prepared who turned out to be lineswomen and ballboys and what have you. It was only the knowledge that they all had Equity cards and wouldn't be able to tell if a ball was in or out that stopped me from dynamiting Centre Court right there and then.

Maybe just like there´s no interest in the USA for football, there´s not much interest for Wimbledon outside of Britain? I know the football vibe, although it doesn´t get me. But I don´t catch any interest about Wimbledon here.

Ok, maybe in 2005 or 2007 that would be different, since "our" team is still playing, so the sports interested concentrate their attention on other business right now. Still, even I can see, why people can have fun with football. But tennis? That must be the most boring game ever. Just like the first video game pong.

I know the names of some current football stars, but I don´t know any current tennis stars at all. All the ones I know, are retired (McEnroe, Graf, Navratilova, Borg, etc...).

It doesn't really bother me, as aside from Who and BB, I don't really watch telly. Unlike football, it doesn't get shown in all the pubs, and the print coverage is minimal in comparison. (Apart from the obligatory butt-shots in the tabs from the ladies' matches, obviously. But those are usually on pages that would have a picture of an arse on anyway... I don't think they make much of a difference to the overall quality of, say, the Daily fucking Star).

Also nobody's drunkenly accosted me in the street yet to talk about it.

I seem the remember the TV coverage is fairly hefty, though- d'you think when the digital switchover happens, and everyone either has digital TV or no TV at all, all these problems wil be solved? That nobody's favourite show will get moved for footy or tennis? Or will it just be used as an excuse to make things more complicated...

I think perhaps one of the things that makes Wimbledon slightly less annoying is that nobody's under any false illusions that anyone British is ever likely to win, so all the swagger and bravado is a lot more half-hearted.

"Come on Tim!" "Come on Andy, Tim's shit!"

I wouldn't come on either of them. Even if Murray did get a decent haircut.

um, yeah. why are the british players so un-cute? even rusedski is unsightly. it's kind of a not-hot era in men's tennis. i mean, i wouldn't kick federer or nadal out of bed but safin is uber-yummy and he's nowhere to be found.
