Wimbledon and Equal Pay for Women

I find myself seething over this issue (BBC article for reference).

Can folks who agree with this decision offer a rationale that makes sense to me? Sure there are all these arguments about men having to play best of five matches and all that, but there are arguments in the other direction. Like at any given point, interest in men's and women's tennis waxes and wanes, so I don't think it's fair to say that men's tennis is more entertaining such that there always has to be this disparity built in.

It astounds me that given how tennis is the only major sport where one could at least argue for equal interest between the men and the women's sides, why can't the frickin' officials just give equal prize money?

Well, I don't know how the prizes are calculated, but I expect it's some function of the profits made. And while interest in women's tennis is relatively close to par with the mens' game (compared with other sports), I expect a ticket to the mens' final would still draw a higher price on eBay than a ticket to the women's.

Alternatively, why aren't the competitors in the wheelchair tournament making similar noises?

there's a certain kind of tautology to the argument that the men's final ticket is more expensive though, since the men's final has always been billed as "better," occuring at the very end. despite this, there have been plenty of times in recent years when the women's final has generated more interest, most notably during the serena-venus williams era. the difference in interest between wheelchair tennis and regular tennis is highly quantifiable, whereas given that the difference in interest between men's and women's tennis is arguable, i think it's a total reflection of a certain kind of british old-guard chauvinism that the prize money isn't equal.

the only professional sport i could think of where there's more interest for the women's event than the men's is figure skating. and i've never seen prizes not be equal in figure skating competitions. it's a total jip!

I basically agree with you sibyline. I think there could well be an element of sexism at play here at some point - either on the part of the All England Club or (more likely, IMHO), the audience at large who still see greater significance in the men’s game.

I agree that interest in both tournaments is relatively commensurate but then so is the prize money - £655,000 for the men’s, £625,000 for the women. Not even a 5% discrepancy. Personally I think they could make up that small difference and make the women play 5 sets to neuter any argument that the women have it easier, or are given ‘time off’ to compete in other tournaments (doubles etc) and make even more money. That would seem fairer all round.
