Well, there's four types: Novelisations of the TV stories, Doctor Who: The New Adventures, Doctor Who: The Missing Adventures and the current breed which are stories that occur between TV stories in the New series. Which did you have in mind?
Of the TV novelisations most of them are completely missable, although the last few seasons-worth aren't too bad, especially when it seems that the writers have noticed the criticisms of the show and changed the novelisations as a result. Terrance Dicks was the grand-master of this form though sometimes liberties were taken with the story in order.
The New Adventures were longer, bloodier, swearier and often more boring.
The Missing Adventures could be quite good when the writer was trying to fit it in with the era they were writing for.
Haven't read any of the new ones yet, though a couple have Captain Jack in. So tempted... |
