Inconvenient Truth

Did this make it across the pond? Like all films on the genre this one made me want to DO SOMETHING at this sleepless and ungodly hour. And this one contained an additional insidious suggestion to "tell all your friends".

I liked it, it presented pretty solid arguments and interesting insights into the culture, rhetoric and norms of Americans, to whom this was geared. It was a litle heavy handed on the traditional filmmakers heartstring-pulling but the amateur quality was kind of charming too: he's a politician, not a filmmaker.

I plan on passing out free reusable cloth handkerchiefs at the theatre when the screenings let out, and engaging in more environmentally conscious public art. Influencing school to compost and use halogen lightbulbs.

So who saw it and what did you think? Or what are you doing about global warming? Do you believe in it or not and why? Do films work?

I havent seen it, but I did watch his interview on Charlie Rose. Listening to him made me wonder why he ever ran for president when it seemed like this was his life's calling. I'll probably see it later on next week and Ill let you know what I think.

"reusable cloth handkerchiefs"
Um.. aren't all handkerchiefs reusable? Isn't that the point? Otherwise they'd just be Kleenex.

It's weird...I felt the same way when I left the theater after this movie as when I'd seen F 9/11: I already know this stuff.

I know I'm prolly not the audience, and seeing it presented all at once in an entertaining way was nice, but everything in the movie was common knowledge to me as someone who tries to be informed on things like this.

However, I have very little faith that things will change. I'll keep doing my part, but seeing more and more Hummers on the road makes me think that Bill Hicks was right, we're a virus with shoes, and it's about time for the old planet to shrug us off and try again.

what are you doing about global warming?

I don't own a car. I fly as little as possible. I turn off, completely, appliances that are not in use. I prefer local produce. I share accommodation. I recycle. I holiday locally. I don't live in the USA …

Do you believe in it or not and why?

Well, global warming is an observable increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in recent decades. It's been indisputable for perhaps twenty years. What some people have disputed is the proof of a correlation of global warming and the expansion of industrial society, specifically, increasing amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That too is no longer in doubt. What's left is uncertainty as to the ultimate size of the effect and its consequences, but whatever about our ability to calculate the effects, the ice is melting, they'll certainly be large and disastrous.

I enjoyed how entertaining Gore can be. He was funny, he was charming and in certain points, rather emotional. It was a "I've already heard this and more" kind of films for me, yet it was entertaining and informative. The person I brought also enjoyed.

He asked me what I do about global warming. I said I drive a fuel efficient, low emissions vehicle and I recycle. I use almost zero paper. There's not much I can do practically.

But let's face it. We should be focussing on long-term survival plans. There's no way we can all (every person) cut down on CO2 emissions enough to cap global warming. The human race is going to be extinct at some point, so let's try and prolong it with some long range plan that includes CO2 control.

or we can just adapt to an ever changing world while driving around and the top of the tach, aimlessly, averaging 8 miles to the gallon in a 4 cylinder vehicle, not worrying about whether or not we're being irresponsible, oblivious to melting glaciers half a world away, and enjoying existence generally

when we're gone the earth will sort itself out

New study:

Tiny airborne particles are a major cause of climate change

As total aerosols increase, cloud cover increases; and as radiation absorption by aerosols increases, cloud cover decreases – for all locations, for all seasons. Backed up with a mathematical analysis, it becomes harder to deny that it is, in fact, aerosols that have the major influence.
