I just knew that was going to be Mr Noseybonk before I even clicked on the link.

He was on Jigsaw. Mid-eighties, maybe?

Thankfully, that clip doesn't show him chasing around that rather mature schoolgirl. Some things should just stay in the past.

It's just the sheer lunacy of the idea that this horrorshow would appeal to children. The permanent bug-eyed leering grin, and washed out features...it's like something out of 'The Wicker Man'. For a long time I thought it was possibly a false memory or dream, but no it's real, and as horrible as I remember.

Thanks Youtube!

I think lil' monk's mental scarification has already reached capacity, thanks in no small part to Oobie, Ooma and the rest of that god-forsaken crew.

Oh god I'd tried to repress that.

Whilst the sepia-tinted photographs of Emily at the start of Bagpuss, and the creeping undefinable sadness that they gave me, introduced me to the concept of mortality, Noseybonk I think introduced me to existential terror. All a bit much before teatime.

If I wake up with that thing at the end of my bed I'm blaming you MacReady.

In the five seconds before I die of terror.

That noseybonk thing is disturbing on so many different levels, but for pure fear nothing compares to the Groke.

The Trial of the Groke

Groke chasing Moomin

The Groke! The fucking Groke! Jesus wept tears of tiny thunder! That scared me for weeks.

Ah, the Groke. Now THERE was a proper monster. That's why I always loved the Moomin books- they were every bit as scary as they were wondrous.

It seems I'd managed to bury Noseybonk very deep into my childhood memories, but since seeing that video he's been haunting my mind for days as it's all come back to me. This is not good.

Today I saw this, and I'm scared again...

He was never okay. EVER.

I blame Janet Ellis, really. She seems to be a magnet for all things scary. Does anyone else remember that episode of The Ronson Mission about fans, when Jon Ronson did an interview with Ms Ellis while being given questions through headphones by a crazed obsessive stalker-type? It must have seemed such a good idea at the time, but after a while Ronson just had to start ignoring the ever-creepier questions ("ooh, ask her what she wears in bed!"- in the middle of an interview about her career as a children's TV presenter!) and try to wrap up the interview.

Ah, the Groke. Now THERE was a proper monster. That's why I always loved the Moomin books- they were every bit as scary as they were wondrous.

As scary as she is, I always feel sorry for the Groke. I think her menacing attitude towards the Moomins was more of a result of loneliness rather than any real desire to do harm. Of course, if I had discovered the Moomins as a child, my feelings would probably have been different...

You know who scared me as a kid? Mr M from The Letter People. God, I miss that show. Unfortunately, the only letter people action I could find anywhere was the opening theme

Noseybonk had totally gone from my head until this moment.

I think there should be some serious concern about the number of people who have wiped Noseybonk from their childhood memories. I mean, how bad was it that we needed to do that? What did it do to us?

Perhaps we should sue.

I can't believe no-one's mentioned Barbapapa yet. That was just disturbing.
