Advice Required: Greetings Cards

Anyone had any involvement in the greetings card racket?

A friend of mine has a concept in mind that she thinks would make excellent cards. She's made a couple of mock-ups which have received very positive reviews from everyone who has seen them.

Now, the question she's struggling with is this: should she try and flog the idea to an established card company, or would she be better off producing them (and marketing and distributing them) herself?

The DIY option would be more work, of course, but she has anecdotal evidence that suggests that the profit to be made from cards produced and marketed by the big companies is negligable.

Does anyone here have any experience of this sort of thing, and any advice to offer?

What about Cafe Press, for instance?

As with books, it's important to make the buyers' lives as easy as possible. Dealing with too many suppliers can make life unbearable for retail staff, so keep it simple. Dealing with one of the big manufactureres can help in that it's one less supplier to worry about. However, as long as your ordering procedure is quick and easy, your invoices have a cost and suggested retail price on them (this helps both with pricing for staff who are unpacking a delivery and accounts like it to keep an eye on margins), and you are willing to take some level of returns, many shops like to deal with smaller suppliers as they give the customers something the bigger players can't provide.
Aim to be able to give retailers a margin of about 60% on sale-or-return and you should be fine.
Me, I want the eggy Doctor and TARDIS on a card, you could make a mint on that, Sav.

That sounds like excellent advice. Cheers, Cube!
