Anyone else watching this? I watched the first two seasons over the past couple of months and am now ready to watch the third season as it airs. There's been a huge wave of inside Hollywood comedies, from Curb Your Enthusiasm to Unscripted to The Comeback to Fat Actress, but this one stands out above the others in the way that it portrays the business in a generally positive light. I feel like so many Hollywood stories seem to be about saying that these peoples' live are actually worse than yours, which seems a bit self indulgent. This series is able to acknowledge some of the difficulties of being an actor in the Hollywood system, but is also aware of the ridiculous luck that these guys have.

One of the remarkable things about the series is that it's largely about these guys enjoying their undeserved riches, witness HBO's third season tagline: "A lifestyle is a terrible thing to waste," and it could be alienating to watch these guys indulge in luxury week after week. Yet, because the characters are so strong, it's like you're enveloped into their world and experience things as they do. The series is a total fantasy, and yet it pulls it off and never feels fake or contrived.

The other major thing that stands out is the series' depiction of male friendship, which is a lot more realistic than most stuff I've seen. So many movies start with the basic premise of 'boys being boys' and then proceeds to end this bachelor existence and move them into married middle class families. So, the pleasure of the film and the ultimate resolution are opposed. You're going to see a movie like Wedding Crashers to watch Vince and Owen seeking action, and yet the film insists on making them grow up and mature away from the very thing that made them interesting in the first place.

So, this show doesn't do that, it revels in this single male atmosphere, clearly a fantasy vision of a world where you can spend all day hanging out with your boys and then have sex with beautiful women at the end of it. How does this play into Vince's claim that his mother is the most beautiful woman in the world in the third season premiere? A bit of a virgin/whore dynamic going on perhaps?

Of course, it's thoroughly enjoyable as just a really funny series. I'm looking forward to seeing it more, and when this is paired with The Sopranos in January, it's going to be quite a combo.

Do they dye Vince's hair blonde for the Aquaman movie? Or does he wear a wig?

I saw a few ep's of this from the first season and they were very entertaining. Matt Dillon's brother playing a not-very-successful actor who's connected to/hangs out with famous actors is particularly appropo, for obvious reasons.

Yesterday's episode had a clip from the Aquaman film, and Vince sticks with the same dark hair he always has. I'm sure the fanboys of the Entourage-verse were quite angry at that.

The episode also encapsulated so much of what the show is about. Implausibly, this guy gets everything he wants, but it's still entertaining. It's highly unlikely the film would have the biggest opening of all time, yet I totally went with it when it happened. And, despite the acknowledged fact that they're ripping off Almost Famous, the party scene was a lot of fun, with Ari getting tossed in the pool a particular highlight.

Being sandwiched between Deadwood and Lucky Louie are not helping this show at all at Chateau Exclamation Point, but Drama continues to win every episode.

"Sit down."

This premiered on ITV2 in the UK this evening...pilot plus next episode...

Very enjoyable, I must say...slicker, as I believe the vernacular would have it, than snot. Just great writing, good acting and hyperspeed pacing throughout. The characters are likeable in spite of their debauched fantasy lifestyle, or maybe because of it...agree with the post upthread about the male frat atmos, and the way it is deftly handled to not be hideous, and am glad it doesn't, or hasn't three season's in, given way to 'fortysomething' soap opera.

Interested to see how it pans out.

I felt it was pretty hideous. I watched 45 mins or so of episode 1 and it just felt like hanging out with horrible people. If the show is simply about continuing to hang out with these men as they continue to reap largely-undeserved success, I can't see any appeal in it. I just can't see the attraction unless the viewer aspires to exactly that lifestyle ~ if there's no satire, just celebration, then to me it would seem targeted at people who wish they were kicking it with the guys by day and picking up random blonde hopefuls every night.

The 45 mins I watched felt like flicking between an LA hotel channel with glossy adverts for restaurants, and an unfunny fratboy sex film.

If it goes on like this, then... what's... the... what's the point? I'm not being antagonistic ~ I just don't see why people would want to immerse themselves in an uncritical visit to this world and these guys, week after week.

Repeats on Thursday (this week) for those who might like to join the fray (or not, as the case may be)

I think that's certainly part of it, it's definitely an aspirational show. I don't know what it says about society that the desire isn't to actually become famous, but rather to have a friend who becomes famous and be able to freeload off him.

I could certainly see having a problem with the show, but I think there's a sweetness to the characters and their success isn't offputting, I always find myself rooting for them. That said, the first few episodes are much more about showing off the lifestyle and dropping names, as things pass, the characters get developed and it becomes more centered around Vince's struggles to get new projects set up.

Well, I guess it isn't my kind of show but I wasn't trying to put down anyone who enjoys it.

Fair enough. Perhaps suggesting that they must be 'uncritical' in their 'immersive' appreciation is not so conducive to conveying this impression?
