The Urge To Post

Whenever I see something interesting or have a thought I often start to phrase it as a post or a thread for Barbelith. Why? Why do I have this urge to post? It isn't just me, look at the folk who leave 4evah then post again minutes later- it's like a compulsion.

What makes us want to share our thoughts and musings with people on the net, specifically here? Blogging aside, why do people burn to tell their stories and put their 2p worth in a discussion on badgers or Dr Who or whatever?

The desire originally stemmed from having a sensible place to discuss The Invisibles. (Y'know, back when it was the Nexus.)

Then the continuing urge to post has come from getting to know most of you and enjoying your various viewpoints and senses of humor. I love this place. I love it dearly. I like that there will always be something to discuss, no matter how small or how silly or how serious.

And for the records, badgers are excellent, and Doctor Who is fantastic.

That's why I used them as examples :-)

Well, I spent about two months reading heaps of posts on the board and marvelling at properly constructed arguments, the fantastic humour and the myriad of personalities that make the 'Lith what it is. I applied to join, and unfortunately it took around nine months for me to work my way to the front of the queue. But I got in, which has been splendid.

These days, I post on anything I can, although I still find the site a wee bit daunting, and often feel like I miss things. When a discussion has kicked off properly, I feel awkward about joining in. Guess I'm still a wee bit shy.

I just need to find a topic I actually know a decent chunk about, so that I can really cut my Barbe-teeth on a proper debate (I tried to do this with my my Military/Paramilitary 101 thread, but clearly there ain't a thirst for my knowledge or opinion in that field. Och well, here's hoping it gets used someday.

I post here because, on the whole, people are smart and open to new ideas. I've been posting more lately, because I've moved and haven't made more than a couple of new friends. The Lateshift is ace for that kind of human interaction. And, frankly, if I tried talking to most people I know about how I find the idea that we're all parts of a fifth-dimensional critter about to be born more plausible than immaculate conception and Christ's death and resurrection, or that maybe there was way more to 9/11 than the generally accepted story, well... Odd stares at best, my friends. At best. The only drawback is that no one else wants to talk baseball, but I can live with that.

'Cause you don't have to put silly things in conversation to move it along. You don't have to talk about what the people at the next table are doing or what's wrong with your flat (unless you want to). You can just go straight into the deep end.

Hmm. Quantum, not to be overly paranoid but your use of "4evah" and smiley seem out of place for you. Are you you?

I've regressed overnight into a teenager :!o
OMG Kill me!!1!!

I'm sure it's just my mid-life crisis rearing it's ugly head, I'll be buying a sports car and an electric guitar next and wearing modern clothes slightly wrong and using current slang incorrectly to the massive embarrassment of all.
I notice those odd looks too- without the Temple to post in I'd be that dude on the street corner on a soapbox or in the pub with wild eyes or next to you on the bus. At least here people are weird in the same way.
I just mistyped that as wired in the same way which would be way more sinister. Like cyberbadgers.

I post because I'm secretly an attention whore. I love it that hundreds of people may see what I say on any given day. It makes me feel special inside. Down deep. Where the special place is.

Also, I enjoy intellegent conversation and discourse.

Well, why I read Barbelith is easy, why I post less so. I even thought about starting a similar thread during the year but it never came to fruition.

Hmm, I think my first post started out as a sort of outlet, a forming of a personality on-line that was different and more satisfactory than mine own or communication in a way that I felt unable to do irl. Catharsis, possibly, in both blatant and less obvious ways. The title fictionsuit made me regard usernames in a very useful way. However, I'm not sure the above paragraph isn't guilty of faulty telelogical thinking either.

Alot of my will to post comes from Barbelith itself as a community. It being vibrant and interesting as a forum and full to the brim of likeable sorts (as others have mentioned). Of course, sometimes I just post to guide conversation in a way that has specific interest to me.

I post because I'm a loudmouth not a quiet type.

Now *I* want a cyberbadger! I'd ask Evil Scientist for help but it turns out he's a salesbot program, shit it. Maybe I can get the Doctor to build a Badger version of K9 and TARDIS it to our time on the sly. Can the TARDIS cross between fictional and real universes?
