Pixar's newest. Vroom vroom. Keywords: NASCAR, weak first trailer, Paul Newman, Owen Wilson, hopefully excellent.

bear with me...I accidentally posted the body of my opening post in the thread abstract here. Yikes.

I actually wrote several paragraphs to begin this thread and accidentally posted them in the abstract; they now seem to have disappeared now that the abstract has been fixed. Ah well.

So discuss away once anyone here has seen this...count me one of those multitudes who was a bit wary of this movie from the first trailers, which seemed kind of weak (but then again, the first Finding Nemo trailer was not all that impressive, featuring the 'seagull farts underwater, or so it seems' joke), but reassured by the many glowingly positive reviews critics have given to the film.

And hey, Paul Newman. Can't go wrong there.

And Jeffrey Jones is an accused pederast. I still watch every episode of Deadwood eight billion times.

Well I've just got back from seeing this and it was great.

Didn't blow me away as much as Monsters Inc. and I think I have seen a bit too much in the trailers but there is still plenty of gold there.

"Larry the cable guy" or whatever his name was is alot better when he's a big tow truck. He has some good funnty scenses but doesn't steal the movie.

I mean its Pixar. They wouldn't klet anyone ruin their movie, they just can do no wrong at this stage.

I'll hold off on talking about it in detail for now but there's a moment later in the film where, had this been made by anyone else, the main character would have to make a choice to be an arsehole and act in such a way that is massively cliched so that the plot can move on and then the ending can get started.the kind of moment where you are taken out of the movie because real people don't do that sort of thing (i know they are cars but you get the point).Worse still I could feel this cliche coming on.

This moment really stuck in my mind becase it didn't go that route and felt real. The relation ships wortked.
Once few more heads have seen it I'll post about the plot in more detail.

One niggle though, the fact that the cars have those big eyes actually detracts in a way from the technical achivements of the film. When the cars are seen from behind or the side or when shown with grand scenery the film really is photo realistic. And then you see those eyes on the cars and your won start to bug out..

Short story..I liked it... its worth seeing

oh adn don't forget to stay after the end ..and after the main credits bit ..and after the in memory of Joe Ranft section. There is one more scene in true pixar fashion!

When the cars are seen from behind or the side or when shown with grand scenery the film really is photo realistic.

And there you have my whole problem with the film! Fuck photo realism. Why go to such painstaking lengths to make something look like it's real? Reality is... oh look, THERE IT IS.

And then you see those eyes on the cars and your won start to bug out..

And there's the bit where go "I kind of think all Pixar films are a really bad mish mash of elements that don't actually fit together." See realistic hair on their cartoon people. Get one style.

I honestly just get distracted by these things, even though I think some of the films are pretty good. I think a lot of the art direction lacks cohesion, and a lot of the time, any style. It seems to be rooted in trying to make unreal things look as real as possible (because we can, and we can give them 30303039838383 individually animated hairs!!!!!!11), which seems to take the fun away from said unreal thing.

I enjoyed this a lot; Pixar works its magic again. And Paul Newman....is just Paul Newman, legend that he is, the Gandalf, the Yoda to this movie. Great voice work all around, and Pixar continues to amaze with their animation. Many genuine laughs....and although I have zero interest in car racing and NASCAR, this made me at least appreciate that whole world a little bit.

I enjoyed all the design elements, esp. all the buttes/rock formations resembling hood ornaments/fronts and backs of cars...and the fact that EVERYTHING in that world is a car.
