Apart from the obvious what sort of employment should one consider with an English degree, alternative vocations, even spiritual perhaps.
I`m all ears.

Thank-you

Nothing. And everything. It means you probably have a degree of discipline and intelligence but, to an employer, that's about it. They really don't care, especially now every second person has a degree.
The big question is what you want to do with what you've learned. Hopefully you'll have gained a bit of insight into history, politics, philosophy and human nature (maybe even some grammar) and will have realised that things are generally not how they are presented to you.
Try a couple of hard manual jobs for a while so you get a feel for what most of the world has to do so if you ever get in a position of authority you'll remember how sucky being at the bottom can be.
Use what you've learned to try to work out how what your abilities might let you do to improve the world a little, then try it.
The biggest rule of all, though, and this is REALLY important: Never get sucked into retail.

Rosslyn, it would really help if we knew something - anything - about you.

It's a big world, with lots of jobs in it. How's about goat-herder?

The approach seems to be a bit wrongheaded but then again maybe not....

I'd sit down and think about what you really want to do rather than let your degree limit you to anything specific. Career guidance and aptitude test are available, professionally not internet test (obviously) if you're completely without direction. But a good solid degree will give benefit you in any career as cube's stated. Also, many careers provide in job training if you're willing to work from the bottom up.
It's all pretty commonsense, so I apologise if this isn't what you're looking for advice-wise.

Become a teacher. Then you can be one of those good teachers who actually know shit and you wanted to go to their lessons.

Also, you could think about some of the places I'd like to work for:

Amnesty International
The BBC
Oxfam
