I'm new, does anybody dig indie / underground stuff?

I'm just checking, because scanning the forums I see a lot of marvel / DC / Image stuff. Is that what this forum is mostly about? ... mostly?

It tends to be, because that's more popular, but if you want to discuss any comic, you're more than welcome to do so.

you'll see a fair amount of indie/non-Marvel/DC stuff covered here...also depends on how 'indie' you mean by 'indie.' Scott Pilgrim indie, or Jeffrey Brown (forget the name of his book) indie? Tomer Hakuna indie? Eightball indie? hard-to-find self-published underground comic indie? Scan through the pages of threads on comics or use the Barbelith search function and you'll see there's some more indie-flavored books here. Welcome, and enjoy!

Mr Falconer I think you are a bit wrong on your assumption that DC, image etc. comics gain more column inches here due to being 'more popular' (however you would rate that to whatever criteria)... They do tend to come out more frequently though, thus have more opportunity to rise to the top of the churn...

But, yeah - whatever comics you want to talk about - start a thread I might well start bumping up a couple of threads myself due to re-reading them or new editions coming out...

At present, the only ongoing I buy is an indie. But it's fairly obscure, so there isn't a lot to say about it.

It's me trailing off at what might be considered the end of a sentence mid-thought, thinking about what might come next...

What's your indie ongoing, Mario?

Is it Desert Peach? I've only seen places stocking it twice, both times it was collections and both times bought as much as I could...

Gold Digger, by Antarctic Press. Between the two volumes, 125 issues, plus assorted specials, all written and drawn (and, recently, colored) by one man (Fred Perry). It just recently had it's 15th anniversary.

He also hand-animated two short DVDs based on the initial storyline, with a third in progress.

Dunno if its really indie, but Im a big fan of Love and Rockets and all other Hernandez type stuff, getting a bit put off by Gilbertos prono flavoured stories recently, is he getting worse ? Other stuff, anything by Dan Clowes, Pete Bagge, Chris Ware, David B, Joe Sacco and Chester Brown.

As for UK stuff I really like Modern Toss, "Alan, come back you wanker"...ha ha hah....... aaanyway.

I don't think Gilberto is getting more "porno", if that's what you mean by "worse", seeing as his actual hardcore (porno)graphic novel Birdland was published in 1992.

By porno do I mean worse....yes.

I am well aware of birdland, and I have absolutely nothing against pornography, but if you compare Gilberto’s work from the new L+R to the old stuff, heartbreak soup etc he seems to have sacrificed plot in exchange for just creating scenarios where Fritzi, (or one of the other mega boobed characters) gets fucked in lots of different ways. I always used to show my friends L+R as an example of more grown up comics, but now I’m a little embarrassed of it.

I still love Jamie’s work and the sex in his stuff is part of the plot, where with Gilberto’s stuff sex is the plot. I dunno maybe I just don’t get it.

By 'more popular', I mean read by more people than Chicken Scratch Quarterly, etc. sleaze.

Yes, because all indies comics are poor selling collections of chicken scratches, and circulation figures for superhero comics aren't continuing to fall...

I'm just winding you up, really, sleaze-o. However, I was serious in regard to 1) not considering 'popular' to have terribly contentious meaning and 2) I could probably bring some stats to display why my use was accurate if you want, but it'd be really, really dull.
