Last summer I went to see Antony and the Johnsons at a big grand Concert Hall that usually hosts orchestra and opera concerts. It was in the middle of a heatwave, grinding, humid and sweaty; and it was a real experience -- not least because there were so many dolled up queers smoking and drinking beer on the footpath outside the Concert Hall itself, usually a middle-class bastion.
Anyhow, Antony and the Johnsons disappointed me. Antony had an amusing patter, but the band sounded tired and played like they'd played the songs about a million times. Way too practiced, way too restrained -- not with tension, but by the numbers.
Also they were totally upstaged by their support act, Coco Rosie. Coco Rosie are sisters who didn't grow up together, but met a couple of years ago and found they were both into music. The show they played that night was fucking electric.
It's hard to describe their 'sound'. Maybe a little like Cat Power, but with more electronic stuff happening, and more beats. Their songs are delicate, vulnerable, and incredibly intense. Like revisiting childhood. I think they're probably best experienced live -- I bought the album after I saw them, but it's not as magical. They also do a lot of art (check out their website) -- really lovely video stuff to accompany the tracks. And Red Bone Slim has a very cute moustache.
I can't seem to get Yousendit to work right now, but have had luck with Limewire. Their latest album is "Noah's Ark", and on that, my favourite tracks are "Beautiful Boyz" the title track. Also "By Your Side", from a previous album, "La Maison de Mon Reve." |
