Tiefschwarz: Fabric 29

Some information.

Tiefschwarz is two brothers, Ali and Basti Schwarz. They hail from Stuttgart in southern Germany, a bustling city famed for high-tech industry and car manufacturing. From the age of 17, encouraged by fun-loving parents, all they wanted to do was play music and party. From word-of-mouth events held in their own flat (which attracted up to 300 people) to squat raves and huge themed shows, they revelled in the spirit of adventure which engulfed an entire generation of German youth. They moved into clubs and were among the first promoters to attract the biggest names in US house – Mike Dunn, Tony Humphries and Masters at Work all played their nights...

Has anyone got this? It seems like something that'd be interesting. What do you think?

I don't mind a bit of Tiefschwarz, for funky German electroclash-styled house, though my appetite is limited. Their old Acid Soul tune was pretty good. Last year's Issst was a nicely discordant bit of casio-tune liteness, though Wait and See goes too far down the "trance dressed up as ironic electro" route with some really horrible plonking over-stated synth riffs. That mix CD is OK if you like in-your-face electroclash with over-cooked synths.

However, for modern electro-influenced German house acts whose name begins with "T", I'd go for the magnificent Trentemoller. More "Minimal" than electroclash, and undoubtedly more glitchy, and arguably much deeper, Trentemoller's as funky as you like. Check out their own minimal fox, and their fabulously evil Chicago-meets-Berlin mix of Sharon Phillips' Want to Need to. They're on Poker Flat, which is so much the house label of the moment it's ridiculous. Trailers / downloads on Juno and Beatport.

For me Tiefschwarz fall too far on the side of electrotrash for me. I like their more minimal tech stuff but have checked out the new album and think its a bit fauxpunk rock for my liking. Wasn't even sold when paired with the beautiful voice of Tracey Thorn. My local record shop were really pushing the Damage ep, and I really wanted to like it. But I don't. Too empty and hollow. Not deep enough for my tastes.

I agree completely with 2stepfan on Trentemoller, and have got a few of his records. Especially love the Sharon Phillips remix, that rocks. Though I'd also recommend going back to his release on Naked Music (The trentemoller EP). Its a lot more lush and beautiful than his more 'stark' current offerings...

Yeah, Trentemoller EP rocks.

Mind you, I'm beginning to think that the absolute best house being mnade right now is the Ame gear. Which seems to be what every other house head in the world thinks! Deep, lush, syncopated, not innovative but utterly gorgeous...

Just checking out Ame as we speak. Sounds very Plastic City... which is a good thing. Personally have been digging nearly everything Aroma records have been putting out lately. They seem to be getting the cream of house at the moment. Lawnchair Generals, Steve Littlemen, Jason Hodges. Its been making my turntables a very happy place indeed!

Never heard of them - thanks for the tip, will check them out! Any recommendations on Ame-style gear? Their deep minimal lushness is really doing it for me right now.

Going back to the concept of Fabric mix-CDs from German electro/house type people, I can strongly, strongly recommend the Michael Mayer (Fabric 13), which is a mixture of more mainstream and more minimalist house, and the Ivan Smagghe (Fabric 23) which is much more minmalist, a bit more uptight. Both very enjoyable, though, though not so much electro-clash.

The Timewriter!!! Goddam, He is fucking amazing! His new album 'Paintbox' is ace. Most things of Plastic City - Terry Lee Brown Jr, Bioground, Get fucked (seriously, its what they are called).

For more minimal stuff, Pokerflat records, Traum records, Nathan Fake, Perlon records, Cynosure, Mike Shannon, my beloved Akufen, Jeff Milligan.

Snakes on a Paleface - The Akufen fabric mix is fantastic too, more microhouse than minimal. Apparently Audion (Matthew Dear) has just release a fabric mix too, that could be interesting...

Mmn, will check that out. My other favourite glitchy/micro Fabric mix CD is Fabric 11, by Swazyak, which I curiously haven't ripped to my iPod - as such, I always enjoy coming back to it more. It has Michael Jackson by Negativland on it, which always makes me smile.
