Thanks for that timely reminder, Jack. You should have a word with the guy who posted upthread about Slim & Slam, given that those were the nicknames of gents whose given names were Bulee Gaillard and Leroy Elliott Stewart. That kettle's looking very black to me.

It's not a question of nicknames, Xoc, it's a question of forename vs. surname. Going with the example given in the opening thread, if Salvatore and Cherilyn can go by Sonny & Cher, then Slim & Slam is similarly Right & Proper.

For that matter, Bulee Gaillard never went by the one-word appellation "Slim," a la Cher—it was always "'Slim' Gaillard." Same for "Slam" Stewart."

I really don't see what's so difficult about this.

OK, so I missed the clarification of given name=first name. I am very, very sorry... I humbly offer: Pat & Dave

Surprised nobody mentioned Simon & Garfunkel yet...

That would be because their given names are Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

I still think "The Captain" counts as a given name...

I thought it was only in Judy Blume novels that people gave their members names. But if more generic, euphemistic appellations count, Antony and the Johnsons?

I would agree with you on that, actually. But one glance at the lady's full name makes your error clear. Perhaps the name of the group should have been "The Captain and Toni," but it it wasn't. It just wasn't.
