Last night I was at my pal's monthly club-night and I managed to catch the wonderful Terry Poison, who hail from Israel. There's four of 'em. Beats and a good portion of the songwriting generally orchestrated from behind the scenes by their only male member, while the girls have the instruments and the stage.
They do a nice line in bassy, poppy, dancey sleaze. I've only been aware of them for a couple of weeks and I can't find any purchasable releases, but they have four songs that you can stream from their website as well as one more on their myspace. My favourites are "Smack Snack", with its kind of anthemic repeated singing of their name, and "Comme Ci Comme Ca" which kind of rolls along on a constant beat, building sound and lovely flowing lyric.
They also have the thing of singing in an English that's accented just ever so slightly oddly. And I like that.
Image reminds me quite a bit of "Hung Up" Madonna; down and dirty with a very catty stage dynamic. Lead singer Louise struts around, in turn fucking about with her bandmates instruments (to be forcefully pushed away) and gyrating, trying her best to make the front row punters feel a bit uncomfortable. Works well, apart from a little hiccup the other night where she almost decked it in high-heels when pushed off of a table by one of the other girls.
I can also report that the girls seem to be quite lovely, while the svengali-ish guy, it has to be said, came across as a bit of a wank.
Anybody heard of them? |
