Peeping Tom

Mike Patton's got a new project out under the name Peeping Tom. You can check out a video of him live on Conan here. I've heard the whole album, and it's pretty good. 'Mojo,' 'Five Seconds' and 'Sucker' are the highlights so far, but I need a few more listens to give a more in depth assessment.

There's some fantastic moments on the album, but some of it is a bit too much by the numbers Patton. Obviously since the guy records so much, it's tough to keep things fresh, but this certainly doesn't have the excitement and variety of something like Mr. Bungle's 'California.' My favorite Patton project is still Lovage, but Peeping Tom is a worthy addition to his canon and definitely worth a listen.

Is that a hair net on Patton's head? I know he's been touring with Rahzel a lot and puts out Dalek, but that doesn't make him gangsta or an old lady (well maybe the old lady of new metal on this evidence).

It's good to see Rahzel in the band and the out of tune violin towards the end was kind of interesting in a they actually gave the backing vocalist something to do kind of way (no. more than that, but still)...by numbers Patton does sort of sum it up though...

I can't wait to check it out personally - his records are always interesting. If you're a Patton fan and you haven't done already, you should check out the album he made with The Executioners. It's stunning and probably my favourite hip hop album of the last few years.

yeah pretty much got all of Pattons stuff, BUT can't find much on Lovage? I read a few reveiws on their kinky live shows, but haven't seen much else? Probably because I don't get into my fav record store as much as I used to, I used to peruse the shelves every week or two but now it is like once every 4 months(bloody work)... Saw the Peeping Tom video on Conan from Youtube, and yes, Patton by the numbers ParickMM, thanks for the link!! I can't say I am the greatest Patton fan, he used to shit me in FNM and after that I kinda liked his throat escapades on his solo stuff and with Zorn and yeah I must listen to that Executioners album more I have squirelled away on my iPod. Will buy it on CD when I get home in 2 months or so...

Here's the Barbelith thread on Lovage, and a more general one on Dan the Automator that mentions it. Lovage was what first got me into Mike Patton's stuff, it's quite different from nearly everything he's done, the closest equivalent would probably be "Pink Cigarette" off of Bungle's California, where he's got sort of a Sinatraesque crooner thing going on. The album's got him and Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields, and they're fantastic together.

Looking at the cover, I was expecting a sort of jokey album, and most of the skits are going for comedy, but the songs are genuinely good, not a pastiche. It's definitely a must have album.

I bought it at lunch and I'm listening to it RIGHT NOW. And loving the hell out of it. It'll take a few headphone plays to absorb everything that's going on here, I think.

The packaging starts the whole experience off perfectly. I had half the office crowded around my desk, watching me pull the tab and the tray pop out. Cooooool.

I had been under the impression Mike Patton was the bloke who invented the Wombles. Clearly he's not.

So, er, he's some sort of leftfield hip-hopper, then?

No, Mike was the singer in Faith No More from The Real Thing on. He's ace.

Arrrgh! I had absolutely no idea this was even a confirmed project, let alone out today, I've been a massive Patton fan for a couple of years, and have been checking for news on this since it was announced. As soon as I give up on it, it comes out a month later. Ordered it 30 seconds ago of course.

Wow, I really liked Lovage and really hated FNM, love Massive Attack and hate Norah Jones, how peculiar. I'm definitely checking this out.

GOOD LORD THE PACKAGING IS INCREDIBLE

I've been listening to this constantly tonight--I don't think there's a weak track on here. I'm not really much a fan of hip-hop...but this stuff really bounces...kind of like old-school Stevie Wonder filtered through vintage trip-hop.

...but then I've been a fan of Patton's work for a long time now, so maybe I'm biased.

Entertainment Weekly gave this album a TERRIBLE review, comparing it to Linkin Park. My guess is the reviewer listened to the first track, then skipped to the Norah Jones track, and ignored all the rest.

I love the high pitched arpeggios (man I'm a awful speller) mixed into the tracks--sounds like a cell-phone ringing just under the volume, which serves to jolt the listener out of complacency!

The harmonies are ace, and again I can't get over how bouncy the beats are. And some of the lyrics KILL ME!

"Love is made like a Starbucks chain"
"Crystal clear, hangin' like a chandelier"
"Apocolype is nearin' so tell me how you're feelin'"
"Assholes grow on trees and I'm here to trim the leaves"
"Circling like a satallite"
"The way you slice and dice me, it's like Will and Grace"

Similies and Metaphores RULE!!!

"Drop that gun, you ain't my fuckin' hero"

this record nonetheless sounds as flat as a watery fart

Oh yeah?

*crosses arms and snorts*

I like it.

Especially "Sucker" and "Mojo Running". This is pure pop goodness, if you ask me. Patton continues to surprise me with what he can do vocally and musically and conceptually.

I first heard Patton in Faith No More thanks to the monstrous and continuously awesome song "Epic," and from there I forgot all about him. Years later, I was in a huge Handsome Boy Modelling School phase and I turned to other Dan The Automator projects, like Lovage, which I loved to death then stupidly sold the CD cause I needed money. Now I can't find a decent torrent of it (hint hint PM me if you can).

The beats are dark and the production is dark. Same goes for the lyrics. It's pop in terms of structure and concept, but this is Mike Patton classic in terms of execution. Thanks for recommending this, Barbelith.

Question: I can't hear anything that sounds like Rahzel on "Mojo". Now this may be a cool thing, but I'd like to at least notice he's on the track. If his name wasn't there, I wouldn't know it's him. Does he do the roll at the very very beginning?

(By the way, I saw Rahzel once live and it was the spectacular thing I'd ever seen. He autographed my hat. Squee! Also, when he did "If Your Mother Only Knew," he did the beat and the chorus and the bass at the same time. Fucking ridonkulous!)

Listening to it (and Lovage, all mixed up) on headphones--I love his "mum da da mum da da mum" mixed super-low on the verses of "We're not alone."

Another ace lyric: "knee deep in the ecstacy" on "Your Neighborhood Spaceman."

yeah, Rahzel does the opening drum fill, as well as others throughout "mojo"

"we'll read a magazine just to keep our minds erased...keep our minds erased" from "We're not alone"
