The T.I. thread got me thinking about the Cash Money guys. If anyone wants to combine this and the T.I. thread to make a southern hip hop thread that's fine with me.

Real Big

This song is 'Real Big' by Mannie Fresh, the primary producer for a lot of southern acts, Juvenile, Lil Wayne, Birdman, Turk, basically all the Cash Money guys from a few years ago. Mannie isn't the best rapper from this bunch, but I like his kinda relaxed singy style rap, and the beat on this song is really great. If you're one of those guys that don't like the materialistic side of rap you may hate this and some of the other Cash Money stuff, but then again this song is so over the top in that regard you may still get a chuckle (he mentions having a truck so pimped that it has an elevator inside). Definetely check it out to get a feel for his production though.

Mannie is so funny. The hook is hilarious, and I love all the comedy fuck-with-the-beat bits (the clapper lights, and one of the best stop-the-beat, spoken-word breaks of all time surely?) I wish more rappers would be goofy like this. Plus I reckon he maybe has the longest track record for consistently producing really great tracks of anyone in rap (I mean I can't think of anyone else.)

Yeah there's something on Lil Wayne's 'The Carter' album like that, where in the middle of a song Wayne says "I just wanna pump" music kinda stops then the old SNL bodybuilder hand clap thingie "you up". It's like a 18 year old SNL skit line just thrown outta nowhere and it makes you chuckle.

First impressions... I think this is what makes the song. The southern flow, makes it kind of - I dunno - "funky" is the only word I can think of but that's not quite right. Ass-shaking is probably better.

and the beat on this song is really great.

I wasn't blown away by the beat first time, but I'm going to give it a few more lessons. I'd LOVE to hear this on a big sound system though.

The lyrical content is really funny. I just like the fact that'd it really piss off "conscious" headzzzzz. More later when I've had a few replays and a think.
