Some of us will meet upstairs at Clown's italian coffee shop, King St, Cambridge (UK), 7:30p.m.-ish, for tea, knitting, and conversation on Thursday 1st June. It's only 45 min to Cambridge by rail from King's Cross, if you are free and in London.

All welcome.

We plan have to a copy of bell hooks' 'Teaching to transgress' (U.K. Amazon, U.S. Amazon) on the table for ease of identification. (The edition I have here is a yellow paperback.)

Would come, since I'm in the area, but Clown's doesn't let you smoke...believe me this is a bad thing for a cafe even in this time of soon to be illegalisation and plus, if you're meeting on King st then surely The Champion of the Thames or St Rad's is a far more soothing option...

Would be great to meet some Cambridge 'lithers though. How about I see you in the pub afterwards?

ooh, Cambridge people!

I'll probably be there. You can never have too many excuses to visit Clowns. I believe there is a smoking area upstairs in Clowns; if not, any of the other places on that road would be fine by me. The Radegund is possibly too small and full to meet in, but I'm very fond of the King Street Run.

You had me excited for a moment, thinking it was Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Clown's is now entirely non-smoking, used to be a great place to go for a cheap bottle of wine and a ciggy after the rest of King st shut. But no more. I'd say the Champion or the King st Run if Rad's is out. Sorry if this is going way out of the original remit of the meet, but booze does loosen tongues somewhat...

I'm not particularly interested in meeting at a pub (especially not if people are going to smoke tobacco anywhere nearby as I hate smokey spaces indoors). Not really interested in alcohol either, so that's not an inducement to me. I suggested Clown's because it's lovely, non-smoking, and serves decent herbal tea at night. Critical theory? Yes. Knitting? Yes. Pub? Probably boring, to me.

'nother Cambridge lither here. It will be excellent to meet other Barbefolk but I don't wanna get my knitting all smoky'n'smelly! I don't smoke these days so I'm not often up for smokeyness.

But nicotine-liking people could always come and knit, or, like, watch us knit (very soothing I'm told) and do some revolutionary talking before heading off to continue their evening in the pub to when the cravings grow too strong. Perhaps?

Anyway I'm really looking forward to it. See you there.

Great. I like your suggestion, whistler. Let's stick at Clown's then.

Looking forward to it.

Hello! I have a foul cold and will not be venturing out of doors today. Have spoken to Saturn's Nod about this and we would like to suggest to anyone interested that we meet next week. Perhaps next Thurs?

Sorry about that, but I'll wager you wouldn't want to meet me right now. I'm seriously disgusting.

I'm not particularly interested in meeting at a pub.

This is the first Barbe-meet you've tried to put together, I'm guessing?

I find the implication here that there is just the one particular setting in which a Barbe-meet would be appropriate, kind of curious. My impression of 'lithers so far has been that we don't constitute all that homogenous a group.

Other stuff: We'll be meeting next Tuesday (the 6th of June) at Clowns (details above) at 7.30pm.

All welcome.

Homogeneous, no. Drunk, very often.
Good to see an alternative going taking shape.

Wow, that was amazing, and a lot of fun.

Thanks.

Let's do it again.

(We didn't go to a pub at all. Just revolutionary conversation, knitting etc.)
