In the sense of that fabulous scouring device that has managed to scrape me up most of the Invader ZIM episodes...the red pill/blue pill guy.

ah, thanks. I was wondering too; I'd only found references to a mystery "software upgrade" that the Streamcast (?) network implemented. there seems something fishy about the official story though. how do you implement a software upgrade and not inform one half your userbase?

And it's nice to know there is another culling EVERY LAST EPISODE of Invader zin from morpheus. If there's any you need, ask. (I'm looking for the "new" seasons, myself).

well, it was the one, so to speak. I'm no longer sure...the new Gnutella interface is nice, but it's very hard to grab stuff...difficulty connecting to individual uploaders...hench my ZIM quest is suffering an ignominious blow. Also, there are now unprompted pop-up ads. The corporate version, Kazaa, works better, but is still slow and stroppy.

solid_state...thanx for the offer. I seem to have about half of series 1...up to episode 24, excepting the one about bologna.

from MegaGames http://www.megagames.com/news/html/pc/morpheuswashacked.shtml

quote: When we reported that Morpheus users were vulnerable, MusicCity vehemently denied any such possibility. Following 2 days during which the Morpheus site was down however, an official announcement from Steve Griffin, StreamCast/Morpheus CEO claims:
"This week MusicCity and Morpheus users suffered dual attacks. First, early this week MusicCity's servers were hit by a massive Denial of Service attack. Soon thereafter, Morpheus users found that a separate attack had been launched on their computers and their Morpheus software programs."
The most worrying part of the letter though is the following:
"It appears that the attacks included an encrypted message being repeatedly sent directly to your computers that changed registry settings in your computer."
So according to the company, the attack enabled access to a Morpheus users registry when that user attempted to log-on to the FastTrack network.

Haven't read the article but this was posted to slashdot today

quote: An Anonymous Coward writes: "KaZaa yesterday admitted to CNET that it was behind the shutout of Morpheus from the FastTrack network. Their reason? The company didn't pay its bills. Still, there has to be more to it than that for KaZaa to cut them off so quickly and unexpectedly, especially since a P2P network's power lies in the size of its audience. There is some weird cat-and-mouse play going on here that can only be damaging to both sides in the upcoming trial against the RIAA and MPAA in California."

The Cnet article mentioned is here

Slashdot conversation on the matter can be found here

a friend of mine recently told me that Kazaa had spy ware attached and that's the only reason why morpheos and gnutella were the better alternatives... also some versions of audio galaxy have some sort of spyware in them too, read on to find out how to see if you have it and rid yr self of it

So... is Morpheus completely fucked then? I haven't tried it in a few days... and there's still some Zims I haven't grabbed yet.
Not understanding too much about this computer stuff, can someone explain to me in VERY SIMPLE TERMS- does it work at all anymore? And if it does, is it safe to use? (Before I try for myself and do something nasty to my computer).

Pretty sure now that Kazaa has spyware...suddenly started get spam again when I activated it...and it's crap for actually getting stuff...and it spawns popups ads.

Morpheus is going now, but it's slow as all hell. They will apparently be releasing a new version soo enough, but for now you're probably better off dealing with po-ups on bearshare or kazaa.

Theres a cool bit of freeware called Ad-Aware that strips out most spyware and clears out cookies for you. I think it strips out the stuff from Kazaa as well, I know it cleared out the stuff from audiogalaxy before they started making that optional.
You can grab it from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/aaw.html.

There is a preview version available for download. It looks very different; I haven't quite relearned it yet, but I appear to have properly downloaded something.
