Beethoven. Underappreciated. I'm doing a Ludwig challenge with a mate to listen to the vast piano concerto set he's got
Hang on, more tomorrow.

...or now. We are on a mission to listen to piano sonatas one to thirty two in order (we have them all on vinyl) so we're putting them on as a default DJ choice in the house until we're done.

I like Bach more than Ludwig but I haven't listened to enough LVB to properly judge (yet). I think I agree with my friend when he says he sounds more... reserved or considered than JSB, less spontaneous perhaps. I find Bach more passionate, but my classical vocabulary is pretty impoverished so it's hard for me to describe the difference. What do other people think of Beethoven? Should he roll over? Do you only hear him in movies and only hear the most famous snatches?

And why don't we talk about classical music much I wonder?

I like Beethoven. that big cuddly dog. he's great!

no really, I think the Beet is the biz. I only really know the symphonies. the second movement of the fifth symphony is a particular favourite. and the Pastorale symphony is wonderful. I like Sibelius and Schubert as well, same kind of ball-park.
(by the way, did you know that Schubert was one of Beethoven's coffin bearers?)

I don't know why there ain't more classical threads. I don't really understand barb if the truth be known. I am purely here as an idiot observer...

I may have listened to more Beethoven than I have Bach, but I think there's plenty of passion in his work. Particularly, the aptly named Sonata Appassionata (Piano Sonata no. 23). I highly reccommend it. In addition, if you're not already familiar, check out the Sonata Pathétique (Piano Sonata no. 8), which is one of my all-time favorite pieces of music. It's been used in some films and TV shows, so you may recognize it.
