Spank Rock: Yoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyo

"Ass-shakin' competition champ."

Yoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyo is the name (thereabouts - the number of YOs is not specified) of the debut album by Spank Rock, like Q-Tip if his lyrics were ghostwritten by Avenue D, or the second, more danceable coming of Kool Keith. I think a lot of people on Barbelith might flip for this album: it's definitely not mainstream, but it is filthy, hilarious, wildly imaginative, and impossible not to dance to - all the things that mainstream hip hop usually does best.

In particular 'Backyard Betty' is a song so nasty, hott and DUTT that a) I almost feel guilty listening to it, like I was looking at internet porn or something, and b) I had to add it to the Do Dirt Myspace page, where you can hear it.

One of the best things about Yoyoyoyoyoyoyo = there are lots of tracks perfect for bridging the gap between an out-and-out 'proper' hip hop track and a bangin' electro/funk/pop track - this includes the awesome, genre-surfing 'Sweet Talk' and 'Bump', which sounds reminiscent of Gold Chains' 'Rock The Parti', which is surely a good thing. 'Bump' also features a killer verse from Amanda Blank - just to remind you how it's the females who've really been reigning in terms of dirty booty-bass/electro/non-sucky underground hip hop recently. Spank Rock themselves are a rare exception to that rule.

"Tap that ass tap that ass tap that ass..."

Mmm. Heard this at the weekend. Liked it, but need to hear it less drunkenly. Or maybe more?

It makes me feel drunk when I'm sober, I'm not sure what it - or rather I - would be like if I actually heard it 'faced.

Psst - for the time being, you can download 'Backyard Betty' plus two remixes here.

I'm listening to this now ("Backyard Betty"). It's fucking wicked. Phat phucking dirty bass, sounds like a casio warming up.

I didn't quite know what to make of this at first, got given a copy by a friend saying "this is right up your street", and for a good minute or so of my first listen to Backyard Betty I could almost have believed that it was some Majesticons-esque undie "joke" on the perceived tropes of mainstream hip hop (being as it's on Big Dada and all)... but the sheer commitment to dirt shone through pretty quickly. It's as if they're just drowning in thoughts of stankfilth - for example, that bit near the end of that song where the "ass and boobs" vocal gets repeated, like Naeem's brain is stuck on a lust-loop, the wrong'n'tasty thoughts just spilling out over one another.

I think the Beastie Boys quote in the summary is a pretty good reference point, the album is kind of reminiscent of their early (non-turgid) recordings, without the "we are goofy and geeky" schtick. The eclecticism and sense of fun (“I’m interested in remixing songs that don't exist. Creating songs just to remix them. Creating songs just to sample them.” - producer Armani XXXchange) do put me in mind of something like "the sounds of science". Hell, there's even a song called Rick Rubin!

For Londoners, they're doing a live set at Fabric this Friday (19th).

I didn't even know that was a Beastie Boys quote, or if I knew, I'd forgotten. I thought it was just an innurnet thing. But yeah, you're totally right - these days I find it hard to enjoy anything the Beasties did after Paul's Boutique - as their politics improved, their music worsened - and this album has some of that early brattish charm.

It's from a sample at the start of "Professor Booty", off "Check Your Head"... although I guess the fact that it's a sample means that it wasn't originally from the Beasties.

Is it a dude or a group? I thought it was a dude. I've been loving Rick Rubin a minute now, and he/they playing in Sydney on Sunday (and Melbourne Saturday I think, which I guess means he is gonna be hell worn out by the time I get to see him) (although I probably can't afford it anyway).

The group is called Spank Rock, and comprises MC Spank Rock, producer Alexxxchange, and a couple of other dudes, I dunno what they do.

Listening to it again I thought I should add for anyone reading this that in production terms the album is much better than what you might expect if you read them being compared to the Beastie Boys - a much more effective lower end, for one thing.

I'm really not liking this at all. I can't possibly see any merit in this group whatsoever.

They are, though, really, the worst band in the history of the world.

Cf. RHCP thread.

Did anyone see them in London? I had my dates mixed up, now I'm wondering if I should shell out for the Sydney show.

Avenue D are the obvious example - search and download (if that's your bag) 'Cock Rock', '2D2F', 'The Sex That I Need', 'You Love This Ass'.

Less consistent for my money but still very good when they get it right are Fannypack - from their most recent album try 'Pump That' and 'Nu Nu (Yeah Yeah)'.

You could even add (early?) Princess Superstar to that list, actually - Last of the Great 20th Century Composers being the album closest in sound and also the best. (The connection here is Kool Keith, arguably a big influence on Spank Rock and showing up on Princess Superstar records.) Although Spank Rock are a little more closely connected to the rest of modern hip hop than some of these artists, IMHO.

I had heard of Spank Rock a while ago, when I was reading a bunch of articles about how the Baltimore scene is about to blow up, but I never got around to actually listening to them before this past weekend. I was in Austin with a bunch of friends for Flipside, and we stopped by to say hi to this guy we know who lives in Austin and is in a bunch of bands and has really great music. He knew we were coming, so he burned us a few CDs for us to have while driving around Austin. One of them was Spank Rock YoYoYoYoYo.

Holy fuck. We listened holes in that CD. Whenever we were in the car it was just nonstop "Backyard Betty blowin' everybody's mind / She can make a star outta that behind". I went to switch the CD at one point, because while I was still having fun, I figured everyone else was getting sick of it, but they stopped me. The day we left, I went to get the car while everyone was packing up their camps, and I rolled back real slow with "Touch Me" rattling the speakers and pretty soon people from all the neighboring camps had dropped what they were doing and were dancing all around the car.

It's just irresistable dance music. If you can hear this and not start shaking your ass, or at least nodding your head, you're not human.

It's so dirty and so creative and cutting edge while still being accessible and danceable. It's the perfect soundtrack for getting dressed in some funky outfit, going out, dancing, and trying to get laid.

The best way I have to describe it right now is Neneh Cherry is to M.I.A. as Salt & Pepa's "Push It" is to Spank Rock

God, I love this CD.

Oh, hey, I just found footage of Spank Rock and Amanda Blank doing "Bump" at Mercury Lounge in NYC on YouTube.

It's here if anyone wants it. Sound quality is shit, it's wobbly as fuck and it's pretty much mostly just Amanda's (unbelievable) verse, but there you go.

Of course, Spank Rock is rocking the Casbah in San Diego in a few weeks while I'm out of town. I might be able to catch them in SF on the 10th, but I'm not counting on it.

See, I cut the fuck up, and I knock the fuck down...

On the 'sounds like this' side of things: Bubba Sparxxx's album The Charm reminded me strongly of this album, once I'd listened to it. There's a thread on one of Bubba's last albums here, but nothing about The Charm.

I'd start it, but I couldn't carry it through (sorry Flyboy).

I concur with the positive comments attributed to this record.

I think the beauty of this record lies in the fact that the lyrics are so blunt and forthright. With so much of music's message shrouded in suggestive lyrics, it's refreshing to hear someone forego that and be so upfront.

have to say they were really dull at the cross festival at the weekend, i thought it was just the soundsystem at first but every other act on the stage was hi-fi quality, sounded very leaden, murky and not at all interesting, tho the room was mobbed so there is clearly a massive buzz about them at the moment

Just to say - anyone digging Spank Rock keep your ears peeled for up and coming Philly crew Plastic Little. I have an amazing EP/mini album from last year called 'Thug Paradise version 2.0' which is still pleasing me endlessly. It's got a crunkish, booty bass vibe, combined with straight up boom-bap aesthetics, and really twisted funny rapping. College boys at a guess, judging from the lyrical content, with the same crassness of Spank Rock. On 'Not a Thug', a standout track, we have my favourite line of last year - "Token black, see me at your house party; Tiger Woods, he's my n***er". Some of it's close to the bone offensive shit - put it down to youthful exhuberence - but it's fresh funny and weird.
Apparently their new album has production duties from DSpank Rock and Diplo, and great things are promised from it. I don't know what's available at the mo - my copy of 'Thug Paradise' came from a girl who knows them, but I'm sure some download digging will unearth some treats. I know thta 'F.O.I.L.' the first track was released a s a 7" but beyond that not sure.
I recommend...

If you like this, can I enthusiastically recommend Labtekwon, especially the incredible sngle Sex Machine? He's a long-time Baltimore indie rapper and lately he's been out to destroy the B'more club bandwagon jumpers.

Labtekwon? I remember some stuff he released on Mush records..but, isn't he a bit more rootsy, old school style? I do remember he's got a great gravelly flow. More info please!

yeah - 'sex machine' is cool. he shd save the haterology, though - the more the baltimore sound gets out there, the more people will go back and dig for originals...

incidentally, the best fwends (who i usually hate) RMX of the forhcoming (oct) spank rock single 'bump' is awesomeness and then some...

I missed these guys when they played Sydney. Loving the sounds off these guys. It is kinda like rubbing your face in someone's genitals while mainlining early 80s electro.
