Let's talk about Quatermass! I know there are fans here. Post-war malaise, monsters in the tube! What's good to watch? Which DVDs are best to buy?

From the Hammer Horror thread:

BtB:
I'd highly recommend the Quatermass films, as these are a cut above, particular Quatermass and the Pitt. Beautiful horror sci-fi stories.

Gumbitch:
can only really echo the quatermass recommendations (the second movie with the excellent location shooting, creeping conspiracy, crusading labour mp and the very, very drunk Prof Q is currently my favourite).

Just so's you know it has been mentioned before.

It's also worth remembering that the first three Quatermass stories predate manned space exploration...

Yeah, my favourite will always be Quatermass and the Pit, the B&W BBC version rather than the colour Hammer film version. I remember watching it repeated as a kid and the visceral thrill i got from them exploring the space ship and discovering the fossilized aliens...

Has anyone seen if the fourth Quatermass story is available on DVD?

And could anyone explain the history of the Quatermass series?

TV 1st, then what happened?

There are, as far as I recall, 4 Quatermass stories, the first three commissioned by the BBC the last one commissioned some time later by ITV, the main terrestrial comercial broadcaster...

Quatermass was the creation of the brilliant SF writer Nigel Kneale. I believe he retains something of the right to use the character and stories...

The first three Quatermass stories were written and broadcast in the 1950s. At the time, it was fairly standard practice to perform drama for live broadcast in a manner akin to a play - I beleave this was how the original Quatermass was first performed and don't think there is a full recording of it still in existence... (this is quite aside from the BBCs old policy of wiping archive tapes for possible reuse - this is the reason why some episodes of the old Doctor Who series no longer exist...)

During the 1960s the acclaimed Hammer studios bought the rights to create film versions of the three BBC stories, prompting Kneale to consider writing a fourth story - he eventually wrote a fourth installment (confusingly call just 'Quatermass') for ITV.

In 2005, the BBC produced a third, more modern version of the first Quatermass story, 'The Quatermass Experiment' again, as a piece of live TV drama, featuring both the new Dr Who, David Tennant and Doctor who writer Mark Gatiss...

"Adios mi Borazon* (bits)!"

I remember watching it repeated as a kid and the visceral thrill i got from them exploring the space ship and discovering the fossilized aliens...
That's one of the film moments that have scared me most, that, and I was forewarned, even. I've only ever seen QatP, although I've read a Quatermass book; I seem to remember everyone died and the world ended, or something equally apocalyptic; it was quite a different tone.

(edit)
Ah, I see the book was based on the ITV Quatermass production. I get the strong impression the book was the better of the two.

*I'd always thought Borazon was a name they'd just made up a la Trek, but it's a real substance, and it can scratch diamond. Neat.

Good heavens.

When I said, above, that that part of Quatermass was one of the things that scared me most on film, I was thinking to myself "the other being a scene from The Woman In Black".

Lo and behold, I find that the script adaptation of TWIB was done by Nigel Kneale, author of Quatermass.

I've just watched the 3 BBC episodes in sequence in one sitting. I'm still in the "awe" phase of my appreciation, but one cogent thought that echoes in my mind at the moment is the line from ...And The Pit: We are the martians. Bloody hell, I mean there's your complex character right there. Wow.

The British-born director and screenwriter is best known for his work on films like The Quatermass Xperiment and The Day The Earth Caught Fire, but he's also among the credited film-makers behind 1960s James Bond spoof Casino Royale.
