There are, as far as I recall, 4 Quatermass stories, the first three commissioned by the BBC the last one commissioned some time later by ITV, the main terrestrial comercial broadcaster...
Quatermass was the creation of the brilliant SF writer Nigel Kneale. I believe he retains something of the right to use the character and stories...
The first three Quatermass stories were written and broadcast in the 1950s. At the time, it was fairly standard practice to perform drama for live broadcast in a manner akin to a play - I beleave this was how the original Quatermass was first performed and don't think there is a full recording of it still in existence... (this is quite aside from the BBCs old policy of wiping archive tapes for possible reuse - this is the reason why some episodes of the old Doctor Who series no longer exist...)
During the 1960s the acclaimed Hammer studios bought the rights to create film versions of the three BBC stories, prompting Kneale to consider writing a fourth story - he eventually wrote a fourth installment (confusingly call just 'Quatermass') for ITV.
In 2005, the BBC produced a third, more modern version of the first Quatermass story, 'The Quatermass Experiment' again, as a piece of live TV drama, featuring both the new Dr Who, David Tennant and Doctor who writer Mark Gatiss... |
