Hanging on the telephone... mobile phone recommendations and info

Well, there comes a time when you have to acknowledge that it's selfish of you, as a Westerner, to deprive the developing world of the mobile phone that you are currently clinging onto for no better reason than bloody-minded parsimony.

Alternatively, you get mobile envy from a dear friend's PEBL (damn his eyes).

So, anyway, here's me thinking of a new phone. At the moment I havea Nokia 6230, which is actually fine, and to be honest if it weren't cheaper to replace the handset than the headphones I might stick with it. I've always used Nokias before, but they seem now to be turning into brick-like beasts with highly dedicated functions (the N series) or massive overspec (the 6280 - who wants to watch TV on their mobile?). I already have a Blackberry, and have taken to carrying a PDA around, and usually have access to a computer fairly nearby, so none of that is massively necessary - although it might be nice not to have to carry the iPod around for shortish jaunts, especially as it is becoming increasingly teasy.

So... I was thinking about the Sony Eriksson 810i, not least because I think black and orange would work quite well for me. Any recommendations? What phone do you use? Or do you abjure mobile technologies?

I run a Motorola something or other - you know, it doesn't actually say what it is on the handset. I know it begins with a V and it's chrome with a nice dark blue middle bit. I can honestly say that I never use it for anything other than phone calls, so the camera (VGA Zoomx4 lens or not) and sound functions are pretty redundant, as are the games.

Which is little help to you, I appreciate.

I don't really like them but need one for work. It's a Nokia N70 - it's kind of funky and it has 3D Snakes which is cool.

To be honest, I am a bit of a luddite when it comes to anything over the 2G. I only ever call and text - never send multimedia stuff or videoconference and I'm not the only one, so to that end I think the 3G technologies UMTS / WCDMA are taking longer than they should to become part of the "essential" part of our phones.

Tangentally linked - I believe the TUC are currently running a programme of for people to donate their old phones (and chargers) to trade union organizers in Iraq.

With conditions there so dangerous and infrastructure for landlines destroyed in the 2003 invasion, mobile phones are incredibly important for all Iraqi's, and even more so for trade union organizers, attempting to ensure the safety of workers in difficult circumstances...

Oh, that's a great plan. Thanks for flagging that.

You should pop that in the ethical links thread.
