Pansexuality/Multisexuality

Pansexuality is a sexual orientation, distinct from bisexuality and characterized by a potential aesthetic attraction, romantic love and/or sexual desire for anybody, including those people who do not fit into the gender binary of male/female implied by bisexual attraction. It is sometimes described as the capacity to love a person romantically, irrespective of gender. Some pansexuals also claim that gender and sex are meaningless to them.

pan·sex·u·al / pænˈsek sh əwəl / • adj. not limited or inhibited in sexual choice with regard to gender or activity. (The Oxford American College Dictionary; 2006)

I've heard the same thing referred to as 'flexisexual'. Mostly in pubs.

I think that could definitely apply to romantic feelings I've had in the past. I consider myself to be a straight girl--I've already had the discussion with a female friend that a few lesbian relationships do not a bisexual make--but I still have attractions to people regardless of gender. Because I never act on them--not out of any distaste, understand--doesn't mean those feelings aren't valid.

Dammit, Dave, I thought I'd coined that.

Flexisexual has the added implication of gymnastics and sexual yoga. Or maybe its like flexi-time? "I'm sexual 3-5 on monday and can make up the other 8 hours anytime between then and the weekend, on my off time I'm ultimately desire free"

Not that I'm saying part-time-sex-yoga is bad or anything, just a thought.

Kali, have you been reading the Bisexual 101 thread? I think the point is that a few lesbian relationships do not necessarily make a bisexual, because the person in question may or may not wish to identify as a bisexual.

Y'know, I keep meaning to read that thread. I guess now I shall do it.

Some of the ideas kicking about in my skull since i went away have been around the area of monosexuality (homosexual/heterosexual) and its relationship too monocultures christianity/atheist secular humanism. Philosophy based on a principle of one view and how that also may relate to sexual expression, one view - one partner type, i am not sure that there is actaully a link to be made as the ideas are still floating.

Bisexuality seems to challenge the notion of one view, one identity and progress to the stage of recognising a duality, two principles in a theistic view point, thesis/antithesis etc etc.

Perhaps pansexuality challenges the philosophy of sexuality to move into a world that is multicultural multifaith and multisexual. A polyphilosophical sexuality that allows all fluids to mingle without cause for identification or catgorisation to one defining factor or be caught in a gender fixed polarity. A carnival.

Still kicking it all around in my skull pan.
