Shamelessly ripped this link from The WEF (it points at Yahoo news):

quote:The study "was part of an ongoing debate about the economics of cigarette excise tax policy in the Czech Republic," Philip Morris International said in a statement issued late on Monday. "Philip Morris deeply regrets any impression from this study that the premature death of smokers represents a benefit to society."

Among findings in the report are that the premature deaths of smokers saved the Czech government between 943 and 1.19 billion crowns (17 million to 22 million pounds) on health care, pensions and housing for the elderly in 1999, the spokesman confirmed.

Smoke a fag. For God, Queen and Country.

And if you hit the link for the "next story" you come up with this charming quote:

Rimi Calvert, a spokesman for Philip Morris in Switzerland, said: "It is very unfortunate that this is one aspect of the study that is being focused on.

"We understand it appears quite cold but tobacco is a very controversial product."

He said the purpose of the report was to set out the balance of costs and savings and it included all sorts of elements, such as revenue analysis and tax savings.

He added: "We had no intention of trying to present a 'positive' side to smoking to society. It is simply part of the balance."

Here's my favorite bit of hypocrisy in my country (the good 'ol U.S.A.)

The government spends billions of dollars of taxpayer money on tobacco subsidies.

People who smoke tobacco get sick.

The government either pays for their health care, or insurance rates get raised on non smokers, to pay for people who are stupid enough to smoke.

In other words, non smokers in this country get screwed over both ways! Are smoker deaths a benefit to society? Who cares, as long as I don't have to pay for it!

I say, let's have a death tax on stuff that people abuse that will kill them (i.e. alcohol, tobacco, saturated fat, etc.)

Yeah, I know it's too simplistic.
