There's a giant 45 ton mechanical elephant wandering around London this weekend. It's being described as the biggest piece of free theatre ever seen. The details are here, including a schedule of where it's going to be.
It was near where I work, so I wandered down for the 2pm event (little girl comes out of the rocket in Waterloo Place).
I arrived before the main event started. The only things visible were a crashed Victorian style rocket ship in Waterloo Place,
and the Elephant, which was down the steps behind the square.
The 2pm event began with a band playing laid back psychedelic riffs on a mobile rig. Then a crane arrangement arrived with the puppeteers riding it, and the girl was lifted from the (opening) top of the rocket, and into the crowd.
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing, and I wish I had time to stick around longer - apparently the Sultan would have turned up with gifts and I may have got to see the elephant moving. It struck me as a great way of making art accessible - the sheer spectacle of it was drawing massive crowds. So what do people think of this kind of artistic event?
Anyone else going to see if they can catch this, or has anyone seen an remotely comparable shows? |
