The Sultan's Elephant

A fall of geckos

There's a giant 45 ton mechanical elephant wandering around London this weekend. It's being described as the biggest piece of free theatre ever seen. The details are here, including a schedule of where it's going to be.

It was near where I work, so I wandered down for the 2pm event (little girl comes out of the rocket in Waterloo Place).

I arrived before the main event started. The only things visible were a crashed Victorian style rocket ship in Waterloo Place,

and the Elephant, which was down the steps behind the square.

The 2pm event began with a band playing laid back psychedelic riffs on a mobile rig. Then a crane arrangement arrived with the puppeteers riding it, and the girl was lifted from the (opening) top of the rocket, and into the crowd.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing, and I wish I had time to stick around longer - apparently the Sultan would have turned up with gifts and I may have got to see the elephant moving. It struck me as a great way of making art accessible - the sheer spectacle of it was drawing massive crowds. So what do people think of this kind of artistic event?

Anyone else going to see if they can catch this, or has anyone seen an remotely comparable shows?

This was fucking great! And right outside my office. I saw the crashed Victorian space ship, the huge mechanical elephant wandering around blowing water at people, and the big wooden puppet guy roaming the streets. I loved how they ripped up the pavement to make it look like the space rocket had crash landed in the middle of Regent Street. Was like something out of Dr Who or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Was really cool to just stumble across it all during my lunchbreak and not know what was going on.

The little girl goes sightseeing

I saw the little girl sightseeing on Friday! She was on an open top bus in Victoria as I left work. She was wonderful and it was a real treat to leave and run into her by accident. I dearly wish I could have seen more.

Oh, yay, it's the giant space girl!

They had this in France sometime last year... I didn't realize it was a traveling show that was going to be performed again. Such an amazing, wonderful thing.

Here's pics from Nantes, France - but if you're enjoying the show in London, you might not want to spoil some of the surprises that may be in store!

In that case, I believe the performance was associated with a festival in honor of Jules Verne, who was born in Nantes. How the pair made their way to London, I have no idea...

One of my friends just sent me this link to a wee movie of the Little Girl Giant out on the town.

I've been emailing those links to friends, spreading the joy. I cannot describe how delightful this is. Fairy tale, sculpture, puppetry, performance art. Be still my heart!
