This is a very easy way to see for yourself whether the diet really makes any sense or not. So far it worked in EVERYBODY with acne.

THE DIET

This diet is an 'elimination diet'; By first refraining from ALL foods that can cause acne, your skin will become totally clear eventually. And once your skin is totally clear, you can start adding (the least-) acne causing foods to your diet again, to the extend that you want your skin to be clear.

Acne is caused by the combination of a high sebum production and pinched off sebum canals. If the pinching off of sebum canals is eliminated, you will get NO new pimples whatsoever.
Most foods contain such substances that make the skin pinch off sebum canals. And if you have a high sebum production, this will lead to acne.
Because most foods contain such acne-causing substances, it is very hard to tell what food exactly caused that new pimple you get.
'Dirty' protein and salt/spices are the most acne causing ingredients in food. 'Dirty' protein originates due to the influence of heat, due to simple oxidation or the Maillard reaction. ALL cooked foods contain 'dirty' protein, but to what extend differes very much; on the intensity of the heat involved, the amount of protein, the ratio of free amino acids relative to total protein content and the availability of aldehydes for example.
Anyway:

If you eat ONLY these foods these foods during two weeks (nothing else, certainly no salt/spices), the results will be very clear before the end of those two weeks:

* loads of well-ripened fresh fruits; as much as you want

* a tomato-cucumber-avocado-chives salad covered with lots of extra virgin olive oil

* some sashimi (raw-fish sushi without the rice)

During these two weeks you also need to stick to the rules below. If you don't, you probably get new pimples anyway.

The rules

1) You should maximally consume 100 gram (3.5oz.) fresh raw fish /-egg yolk a day. This because redundant protein can easily increase the blood-protein level, since blood protein level can fluctuate very much; from 100% (alanine) up to 900% (cystine). A too high blood protein level can elevate the protein level in the true skin, making the skin temporarily retain more water, pinching off sebum canals.

If you intensively work out, you can consume much more 'clean' protein, since then the body very effectively utilizes extra protein.

2) You should remain physically inactive for at least 1.5 hours after every time you have consumed some fresh raw fish or -egg yolk.

3) You should eat some Brazil nuts, avocado or a few bites of the salad that is covered with sufficient olive oil after every time you have eaten some fruits / fresh juices. This to stabilize blood sugar level.

4) If you want to eat the fruits, salad and sashimi in one meal; first eat the fruits, then the salad and finally the sashimi, to prevent cramps / gasses / bloating.

5) While on this sample diet you cannot use any topical or hormonal treatment (no Murrad, no Differin etc.), because any of these can also aggravate acne. (Browse through the archives of on-line acne discussion boards)

6) You cannot use any moisturizer. Moisturizers contain chemicals that are absorbed in your skin to attract water, which may lead to an increased water-pressure in the true skin, which pinches off sebum canals, causing acne if also much sebum is produced. To protect your outer skin from dehydration you instead should use a fingertip of oil (that is low in vitamin E, since vit. E accelerates shedding of the skin) and spread that all over your face (that is still a bit moist) after you have cleaned it with a mild cleansing lotion.

7) Don't clean your face with tap water, but with low-mineral bottled water. (like Volvic) Chemicals in tap water can trigger allergic-like reactions that cause tallow canals to be pinched off. Excessive chloride and other minerals in tap water dehydrate the skin, thus causing dry flaky patches on the face. You don't need to buy a special water sprayer for your face; you can use a plant sprayer filled with low-mineral bottled water, of course.

8) You cannot take any supplement while on this diet, because all supplements contain ingredients that can cause acne (like gelatin). This diet abundantly supplies you with all required nutrients. (but if you are a vegan, you have no other choice than to take supplementary B12)

Since sashimi (fresh raw fish) is kind of expensive, here is a perfect alternative:
Fresh raw egg yolks in a fruit-shake.

First you mix bananas, 1 apple or pear and some orange juice in a blender. Then you add fresh raw egg yolks AFTER the fruit has been blended, only stir with a fork. You wount actually taste the egg yolk, except that it makes the shake taste creamy and a bit vanilla-like.

Of course you MUST make very sure that the eggs are fresh. If the egg shows all signs of freshness, you are also ensured that it does not contain too much bacteria, since the bacteria make the egg watery.

To check freshness, you should know that

- if there's a crack in the shell, salmonella can have entered.
- washing the shell also enables bacteria and moulds to enter the egg.
- consuming fresh egg yolk regularly, the eggs are to be stored in a cool and dark place, but rather not in the fridge.
- fresh eggs roll wobbly, when rolled across a flat surface.
- old eggs dash when shaked, for containing more air.
- fresh yolk is convex and firm. Not-so-fresh egg-white is watery instead of jelly-like.

And:

To determine whether an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh, but if it rises to the surface, throw it away.

Consuming not-so-fresh egg yolk can give you gripes and the runs.
Don't consume raw egg white. Egg white contains avidine and ovomucoid which inhibit digestion. Also do not consume the 'bag' containing the yolk and the string attached to it:

Just crack the egg in half. Dump the yolk into the other half leaving as much white in the other half as you can. Keep doing it until you're satisfied. Then put the yolk in your hand, and puncture it. Squeeze all the yolk out of the sac into your cup and your done.

Instead of the fruit mix described above, you can also blend other fruits of course, but many mixes dont combine with fresh raw egg yolk that well.
And if your acne is extremely severe even the blending of banana may cause acne. So in that case it might be a better idea to have the fresh raw egg yolks with for example only orange juice instead (Mexican breakfast), and just eat whole bananas and mix other fruits.

Having a blender in your backsack is not very practical, and with this diet you need to eat more often, since you don't easily eat as much as with normal food (since this food does not contain appetite enhancers like beta-carbolines; has anyone ever overeaten on fruits?).
That is why dried fruits are very practical; dried figs, dates, aprictos, raisins etc. They can be perfectly combined with in shell Brazil nuts (shelled by hand, because the nuts are massively shelled through the use of either heat or quick-freezing, which also originates 'dirty' protein), for on-the-go.
But make sure they are in shell, because the shelled nuts can definitely cause acne too.

Oops, I forgot to tell you this:

Acne is caused by the combination of a high sebum production and pinched off sebum canals.
The pinched off sebum canals are due to excessive moisture in the true skin, due to an increased level of chemicals with water-attracting properties in the true skin, which increases the water pressure, pinching off sebum canals.
Blood salt level are quite strictly regulated (30% fluctuation), but even a temporary increase in the salt level can also start the accumulation of sebum by temporarily pinching off the sebum canal. Furthermore, the skin tends to keep extra salt in the true skin to make the skin locally swell when the skin has been bruised or wounded.
'Dirty' protein can cause acne because the enzymes that need to decompose dietary protein in single amino acids are specialists, each can only separate one or two specific amino acids of the 18 amino acids from other amino acids. And heat damages some of the amino acids linked in dietary protein, and that linked amino therefore does not match the 'job description' of that enzyme anymore, and therefore remains linked to other amino acids. These peptides (linked amino acids) are mainly absorbed in the lymphe, but cannot be utilized by the organs because these need free amino acids for construction purposes. The peptides end up in the skin, where the lymphe runs slow, and are partly decomposed during the night, due to the influence of the increased secretion of ACTH and cortisol. Until then, they can cause acne by attracting more water in the true skin. Especially since blood protein levels can fluctuate widely, from 100% (alanine) up to 900% (cystine)

In some people even too much fluctuating blood sugar levels can cause acne. Sugars are also hydrophylic. Blood sugar level is in general very strictly regulated (39%), but in some people this regulation mechanism is less strict. (like in diabetes)
That is why you should consume some fat (a few bites of the salad containing olive oil, or some Brazil nuts) every time after you have consumed some fruits; fats stabilize the blood sugar level. (this also inhibits cravings)
Fats stabilize the blood sugar level because (besides alcohol) for energy the body only has fat-like molecules and sugar-like molecules at its disposal (redundant protein is converted into both).
sugars are 'fast' but short-lasting energy, fats are 'slow' but long-lasting energy. Together they are perfectly complementary.
If you consume too little fat, the blood-sugar level goes up fast, but also goes down again fast, because it needs to supply all energy; too much fluctuating blood sugar levels. (which also causes cravings and moodswings)

Hi Reidcourchie

If you still get new pimples after having been on the diet for three days, you are probably doing something wrong.
So let me know when you still get a new pimple, and we will check out what is the culprit, okay?

Please keep us updated!

This is slightly OT from the acne discussion, but I think relevant to the 'opoid' part of this thread (and the previous thread - which to be honest was getting pretty much too scary to post to!).

Anyway, couple of things, /if/ (and I haven't checked any of the refs, so I am remaining sceptical at present) bread etc contains significant levels of peptides which agonise endorphin receptors...

1. What of chocolate? - probably one of the most well known endorphin release inducers. Does this have anything to do with the 'myth' of chocolate being bad for spots? Does it in fact appear to be a myth because other foodstuffs are preventing any noticeable beneficial change from abstaining from eating chocolate or is it all a load of cobblers?

2. Opoids - all know that opoids == dependence and tolerance symptoms....so (and this is a bit tenuous) if we are exposed to them all our lives, aren't we likely to develope a significant tolerance to the effects? Also, if it were a true 'opiate' behavior, the tolerance and dependency effects would necessitate increased doses....hmmm

3. Endorphins also released in response to pleasure and happiness, so how does that fit in with the whole 'it's bad for you' scheme of things? Are our bodies now trained at a cellular/mental level to such a degree that we need sedating if we get too happy? (yes, tongue in cheek!).

I don't doubt that dietary changes etc are very influential for a number of conditions and for general state of mind, but I think it is rather short-sighted to make the claim that removing/adding certain foodstuffs affects only this one area of the body's chemistry. It's a complex bit o' kit and making a radical dietary change causes changes in all sorts of other areas - hormone/enzyme levels etc. There are very rarely any nice tidy simple answers....hope that is food for thought (if you'll pardon the weak pun!) .

On a side note - want to see something really worrying when (IMHO) people get a bit too into this sort of thing? Check out this guy. His parents obviously think they are doing the right thing, but personally it makes me a tad concerned (not to mention all the UVB he must soak up to keep that tan!). Note also for people who claim to be 'eduacted to the highest standards' in this area they seem to be remarkably deficient grammatically...hmmmm

GAH!!!! And why? why? why? does this thing /insist/ on calling me a 'junior member' despite going to the trouble of sorting it all out previously! 'Spose I should be flattered really....I've grown out of the acne after all
