Apparently, it also made psychotic patients temporarily sane.
Essentially, it's a mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen. The oxygen levels are high enough for it to be perfectly breathable... but your body doesn't register that. Apparently, the way you know you're getting out of breath has to do with rising levels of carbon dioxide.
If you want to make someone think they're dying, let 'em breathe CO2.
