5-HTP (5-Hydroxy-tryptophan)

I've been hearing a lot about it lately. I've read up on it at Wikipedia but I'm interested in hearing personal experiences with it. I suffer from chronic insomnia and a buddy of mine recommended it. I always like to get as much info as possible about a supplement (legal or otherwise) before trying it and this seemed like the place where I might find a few people in the know.

Why were you taking it? How much were you taking? Did it help? Were there any unwanted side effects? Please let me know.

Thanks.

I take 2 50mg capsules of 5-HTP most nights. Started taking it because I heard about it somewhere on the internet; quite possibly erowid and it seemed like it might not be a bad thing for someone who makes some of the er lifestyle choices I do to try out.

With regards to side effects the only one I've noticed has been that smoking withing a couple of hours of taking 5-HTP becomes a really unpleasant experience, but since I'm generally taking it directly before going to sleep that isn't really much of a drawback.

The anti-depressant effects are probably more noticable for me, I used to suffer from periods of bleakness and lethargy quite badly from time to time and since I've been taking 5-HTP I find that this happens vastly less frequently and when it does it's less severe and doesn't last nearly as long. It certainly doesn't make me feel in an way like I've taken a drug, even a legal one, I simply find since I've been on it I'm far more inclined to wake up and find I'm in a happy chipper mood than a shitty one.

I have found it helps to a degree with my insomnia, although perhaps less so now than when I first started taking it a little over a year ago.

I'm far more a science drop-out than a scientist and I'd certianly be interested to here from and scientist as to how sound the apparent scientific explanation for how 5-HTP is suppose to work actually is. To me the idea of taking a precursor to serotonin potentially increasing the levels of serotonin available seems quite sound, but as I say I'm very much a slightly educated layman when it comes to this kind of thing.

Thanks for the response, Shiny. I, too, suffer with insomnia and depression, which is why I've thought about taking this at night. I guess I'll have to try it out and report back here.

As you say, I'd like to hear from some others with more information.
