First off, I wanted to say hello to everyone here and thanks for accepting me at Barbelith. I've been lurking around for a few weeks, and I've made a couple of posts here and there, but I'm having trouble getting used to navigating the board. My home forum, where I kind of "hang out" online uses IPB, and I find myself depending on a lot of the info presented with the threads to know which ones have new posts and such. Here it's a little confusing and I often find myslef clicking on a thread only to find I've already read the whole thing. If a few people share their "Barbelith browsing style," I might be able to get the hang of this.

Pay attention to the time and date of the most recent post, or at least what number post it is, and realize that threads which have just been posted to move to the top of the fora. So this thread will slowly sink to the bottom of convo but move to the top again whenever someone posts something new.

Also, we're a bit of a slow board in terms of turnover. Some fora are faster than others--this one has a fairly speedy turnover, whereas Books (f'rexample) is always on the quiet side. Weekends are generally pretty dead. Things get a bit more lively on weekdays, when people are trying not to have their brains smooshed out of their ears by vile vile work.

I didn't notice the time of the posts on the pages, so that's a good indicator for new stuff. In a multi-page thread that I've already seen, is there any way to go directly to the last page rather than getting page one, then clicking the last page number?

No. Sorry. Barbelith has... character. It has loads of really cool functions, like distributed moderation, plus a few wee glitches like the one you've just spotted. I guess the only other real biggie is the search function, which doesn't. We use Google. Think of the board as being like a wonderful old house by the sea, full of astounding things and with an amazing veiw; sometimes the air condtioner goes on the blink or the boiler needs a bit of a wallop, but it's worth it.
