GNARLS BARKLEY <-> OUTKAST - dungeoun family ties.
not surorising they sound (partially) alike.

Thanks for that. %Mac's post on the subject was impenetrably vague%

Uh, this album kicks ass. I seem to be the only one outside of the UK that like it, everyone else stateside is sleeping on it, but it's really, really good. And I didn't like demon days at all, I thought it sucked compared to automators production.

However, I wish it was a bit longer, but hey, that's cool.

I absolutely luuurve this tune. Crying out for a full-on house mix.

I'm impressed by how much of a grower it is, given its very rapid rise to ubiquity. There aren't that many singles that make you understand why lots of people might still be buying (or downloading for the first time) the song after weeks or even months of heavy radio airplay, etc. But this feels like one of them.

Nail, head. That's exactly it. One of those songs that gets less and less familiar the more you hear it.

I've lost my copy of the album. Gah! I haven't rinsed it nearly enough.

Transformer is the absolute bomb. I listen to that song like eight times a day.

I think, in terms of Outkast, it's sort of Andre 3000 but with a laserlike focus on what he might have been trying to do without all the bloat that Love Below had.

This song is still number one- blimey! Will Lordi knock them off the top spot?

I can't wait til everyone jumps out their windows when the song comes back new and improved by Paris Hilton.

And, no, Benjamin, "St. Elsewhere" and "Just a Thought" are the BOMB ohmygodsogood tracks. I take issue with your personal opinion!

So, according to their Myspace Page the Gnarls Barkleys are deleting Crazy so their (vastly inferior) song 'Smiley Faces' has a shot at the number one. You heard, they're deleting a good song while Avenged Sevenfold are still allowed within two-hundred feet of guitars and eyeliner. It's not right I tells ya.

Or so they can sell more albums, which will still have crazy on it, and which make them more money.

Still seems like a daft thing to do though- if there's still mileage in it...

It might stop people hating them, how much radio play is it getting? If it's on every 5 minutes the backlash will kick in and they'll be screwed. Deleting it gets them in the news as well.

What does deleting it really mean given current technology, though?

I guess the CD single will no longer be available- the download will still be around as it's on their album- so it will probably be in the charts next week even though its been deleted.

I'm assuming that the label has chosen not to press any more singles- but what about those still in the shops and on sale this week?

The more i think about it the stranger it seems.

'Crazy' has now been deposed as number one... to be replaced by the worst single of the year so far.

I think this is my favorite thing of all time now: Gnarls Barkley as Star Wars do "Crazy" at MTV Movie Awards

totally, flyboy. when I first heard this, I was trying to work out what decade it was from- maybe a cover of a northern soul classic. it sounds somehow timeless, ageless. that immediately got my attention, and then the tune just grows and grows on you...

The 'Smiley Faces' video goes a long way to solidifying Gnarls Barkley as the greatest concept hoax band of all time. And I LOVE that Danger Mouse is continuing his relationship with Dennis Hopper!

That CeeLo's got a pair of lungs on him, ain't he? Trying to place what soul singer he reminds me of most. I love the way they seem to be revisiting the classic soul (70s) vibe, but updating it with new lyrical concerns, production etc. Great stuff.

Nice to see CeeLo having some major major success as well. Perhaps it was TEH MAN screening against his body type that preventing him making it before.

I'm enjoying the album like, well, crazy. What makes them a "hoax band," though? Is that just a term for a kind of made-up name for two people working together, or is there some sort of fabrication that the band "lives" in?

I really just bought the album based on recommendations here and elsewhere, but I don't know much about the group except it's Danger Mouse, who I knew a bit about already, and Cee-Lo, who I had never heard of but am rapidly coming to deeply appreciate.

maybe "hoax band" isn't the right description, but they've made up this elaborate story about how Gnarls Barkley is a specific person, and they just kind of know him and put out his music. just watch the Smiley Faces video for the gist of the "mystique" they've created.

I think "hoax band" is dead on, then. I had no idea. I'll watch that video, if I can convince my grumpy ol' Internet connection to download it.

maybe dangermouse is taking them in a cartoony direction after the success of Gorillaz... I don't think they need it though. I saw them in the paper dressed as Robin Hood, and it seemed beneath them somehow. I think they would do better staying with a 'cool' angle, like in the inkblot video for 'crazy'...

I got word of this album from my roommate a few months ago, and it is just candy-covered wonderfulness. But really, how is "Go Go Gadget Gospel" not the greatest song of all time?

Trying to place what soul singer he reminds me of most.

There's a few tracks on his "Cee Lo Green is the soul machine" record where his voice really reminds me of Al Green.

I've now gone through the exact same process with 'Smiley Faces' that I went through with 'Crazy': heard it for the first time and thought it was inoffensive enough but nothing special, and wondered if it might start to annoy me if it became ubiquituous. After a couple more listens I started to get the nagging urge to turn that into several more listens, and now it feels like one of my favourite songs of the moment. (I like the video a lot more than I expected as well.) I wonder if this means I ought to buy the album?

Of course you should Flyboy its bloody great, although those are probably the best two tracks on it its still pretty damn fine- IMHO its a perfect summer record and there's still a month left of sunshine- something to perk up august with and be the soundtrack to your Barbeques.

...and if you haven't already got it get the 'Cee Lo Green Soul Machine' album too- its even better, although i suspect you may already have it you haven't commented on it in the thread so i'll try and push it on you (sounds like i'm on commision the way i'm peddling this record...)

somebody please help me.

I'm going nuts because I think Necromancer's backing vocals are from something - like an old movie or I don't know what - but for the life of me I can't place it. Anyone think they know what it is?

I've been googling this for about the last hour only to run across the Barbelith thread (I'm here often but not in Radio & Music). I figured if anyone would know it would be a 'Lither.

ok so Gnarls Barkley have had some great videos made for them- then came the stinky hunk o junk that is the Gone Daddy gone video- talk about chepening the brand with a crappy CG substandard 'Bugs Life' rip off!

... but it looks like things are looking up again with the Barney Clay directed "Who Cares" video featuring Mario Van Peebles as Blacula...

Link here

I really like this video- its funny, and a stylish homage rather than a shit rip off... any thoughts?
