Hello, sorry, this isn't just a begging thread, honest.

I'm doing a thing for Save the Children this coming Wednesday (26th)- about a 3km run, basically out the door of the office, down to the sea, then along to the pier.

Now, frankly, and as some of you will well know (stop laughing please), the idea of me engaging in exercise of this sort (i.e. outdoors, daytime, philanthropic) is kind of out there. it took the promise of getting out of work an hour early to tempt me into this (BY WHICH I MEAN I'M DOING IT FOR THE KIDS), and i'm expecting to look quite daft as i'm bouncing along and being beaten in the running stakes by people twice my age. it'll be funny and there might be photos. and i need some sponsors, otherwise i push my self to the very edge of life and health and not even any little kiddlers benefit, and that wouldn't be right would it?

so sponsor me - just a couple of quid, dollars, euros, shekels will be loads and very gratefully appreciated. just put up a little post here saying how much you pledge and when i've done it i'll PM you my address so you can send the cash over. easy. if you think this sounds a bit suss, i'm sure some lovely and more generally trustworthy lithers will pop along soonish vouching for what a decent, upstanding and not-likely-to-rip-you-off or lie-about-this-kind-of-thing individual i am.

thanks, much appreciated.

it'll be funny and there might be photos.

Guarantee this and i will pledge five english pounds to your cause.

Gumbitch in running shorts is a sight we all need to see.

Ha ha ho ho, indeed. I knew nothing of this.

How much are you looking for? I'm pretty broke at the moment, and as you well know all my money goes on the kids already, but I'm happy to shell out a few quid to see you sweat. I might even leave work early so I can laugh at you as you wheeze... I mean whiz... past.

10:33 / 21.04.06
the price ceiling is a fiver - please don't anyone pledge more than that otherwise the people who've pledged already are going to look cheap (plus i'm sponsoring a chap at the mo' who's doing a marathon, and i've only pledged him a fiver so that'll also help keep things in perspective).

if i get a good amount of replies here i'll consider doing it in short shorts, otherwise it's tracky bottoms i'm afraid.

you're doing a great job barbelith, keep it up.

Surely there's someone else on Barbelith that needs to see Gumbitch in shorts?

I'll give you two quid - but we need to see pics!

Wouldn't it be easier for sponsors to just send the money directly to Save The Children?

Mourne Kransky
01:34 / 23.04.06
that would absolve Gumbitch of his short shorts promise though, not that it rele matters at 03.33.

This is as much about short shorts as it is about the children.

Bobosso pledges £3

mad props to the recent sponsors- you have saved the world.

finding short-shorts is much trickier than expected, am now seriously considering chopping down some normnmal-shorts to the proper length. also, not a single charity shop in hove has any running headbands or sweatbands or anything, which i thought i'd be spoilt for. i am in the process of getting a friend with a camera to wait for me at the finish line, so the suspicious/humiliation-crazy ones among you will have your proof.

getting a bit scared now if i'm honest. a friend said at the weekend that by about half way my (a bit smoke-damaged)lungs will 'start to taste like blood'. great.

(since I started this post a chap has come into the office who did the marathon on sunday. 3km really isn't a lot is it?)

LOL

No it really isn't.

Ariadne
13:10 / 25.04.06
Well ... it's not a huge distance but when I started running I couldn't have done 1km without stopping! It's still a fair way if you're not used to running. Good luck!

Spaniel
13:15 / 25.04.06
I know that was mean, but the idea of Gumbitch getting involved with any physical activity makes me chuckle.

13:16 / 25.04.06
Poor Gumbitch. I hope you have masseurs and silver blankets ready for the finish line.

Actually I suspect he's fitter than he thinks he is.

So what time is this happening?

around half-five this afternoon. got the shorts: canary yellow, and headband, white, from claires accessories, plus some dextrose tablets (or miraclo pills as i like to think of them). shorts are looking a bit roomy, so i may have to chop them back a bit.

sincere thanks to everyone who's sponsored me. to everyone who hasn't, particularly those of you who've known me 'irl' for five years or more, YOU'RE A BUNCH OF FUCKING DISGRACENIKS and you better get your sponsor-fingers moving double-quick: sponsor books will remain open until the pics have been up for 48 hours (it may take a day or two to get the pics up in any case).

disgraceniks i tell ye.

I agree. It's frankly appalling behaviour. I mean, you ask your friends to do something for you, just a little thing, mind, but something that you'll really appreciate, and what happens, nothing gets done.

Hint hint

Quantum
12:35 / 26.04.06
You can pry my £3 from my cold dead fingers... or I can give it to you tomorrow. I'm sure after the THREE THOUSAND METRE run you will be low on blood sugar and your screaming muscles won't get you to the dizzy heights of Kemptown tonight or you could have it then (at Fraely&Macready's thingummy).

Quantum
12:43 / 26.04.06
I finish work at five and am five minutes from the pier, what's the best viewpoint to get my £3 worth? Also, since I may have a digital camera, what the fuck do you look like beyond canary yellow short shorts? And can I throw comics over you like confetti at the finish line, I have some Geoff Johns stuff I want to shred that would be perfect?
Anyone else coming to the finish line to do a Nelson Muntz?

cheers Q, you're right, i don't think i'll make it up to k-town tonight. is your shop open bank holiday monday?

Have you done any training G?

Cos if you haven't while the run is certainly achievable- it may be pretty painful.....

Who's taking the pictures? We will need to see lots!

13:16 / 26.04.06
The shop will be but I won't be there until Tuesday. Maybe I'll give you the £3 at the finish line (if you make it...) I'll be the one shouting 'GO GUMBITCH!'

So there we are, all done. Achy legs this morning but I got up earlier than usual this morning, surprisingly spry-feeling. Did it in thirteen mins thirteen secs – I reckon I could have gone on a bit longer, but probably not done it much faste, without anyways getting the bleeding-lungs feeling. Not really done my sums, but I reckon I might be due around seventy quid’s worth of saved child. Thanks to everyone who sponsored me, think what superior examples of humanity you are compared to those who didn’t.

Best bit was meeting a new barbelith though, the delightful quantum who showed up to cheer me past the finish line. Lovely to meet you, cheers for the support, catch up with you for a beer early next week. Worst bit was being way puggled to go to fraely’s cartoon exhibition opening, I’ll drag myself up to see it this weekend though.

Pics to follow shortly, and then it’s paying time you flipping melon farmers.

Surprised you've never met Q before.

Hurrah for the kids!
*sigh* such fine, fine knees Gumbitch has. Dude, you missed free wine, free comics and Galactus, it's like that music video (radiohead?) where he does all the pressups and then is too knackered to help that guy. If the guy was in a Galactus helmet.

09:03 / 27.04.06
Well done Gumbitch- i'll get a cheque in the post- PM me with who to make it out to.

I'm sure its not too late for any Barbelith late comers to donate a couple of quid once the photos are up is it?

Anyway I heard you won it? Was there a tape finish line and all that? Tell us more- a marathan next year maybe?
