We'll Scottish Barbe-meet again...

Anyone fancy another Scottish Barbe-meet? I thought the last one went well and it was probably about time for another. Anyone any preferences for venue or time?

How short some people’s memories are…

Would the West Coast of the US fancy making a tactical alliance with the Scottish West Coast mob? With outside aid we can finally crush those snooty East coast 'lithers who lord it over us with their fancy Edinburgh ways. In exchange we can act as a fifth column for you within the GMT based board.

Your treachery will not be forgotten come the revolution, Phyrefox, nor iamus’ complicity. I feel no meeting could even be considered until sufficient… reparation… is agreed. Without solidarity our cause is as nothing. The intellectuals of the Edinburgh collective need the unthinking brawn of the Glasgow proles behind them if we are to lead the challenge upon the London oligarchy! Until the schism between East and West is healed I see no way for our two factions to once again come together in peace.

Sorry for the delay - wanted to check our calendar. We might be able to come if it's this Saturday or the one after, but after that we'll be busy for over a month.

Are we thinking Glasgow this time?

Blake Head
16:19 / 23.04.06
Sorry for waffling; I'd be quite happy to meet this Saturday, or next Saturday but late-ish, but either is good. I thought it was Glasgow's turn as well.

Blakehead: A moment of weakness, the Class War rhetoric took over and blinded me to the bigger picture: the need for Scottish barbeloids to throw off the chains of oppression and smash the current London-centric system.
But enough of this tomfoolery and down to business. I can't do the bank holiday weekend, but could do the next weekend. I beleive it is Glasgow's turn to play host, but beyond that am open to suggestions.

Oh yes. You just beat me to it, in fact. Should be good for either.

Where should we meet? Anybody looking for food?

You guys have already done Mono, right? The 13th Note, across the road, does veggie/vegan.

And alcohol. Quite important that one.

Ariadne
16:04 / 24.04.06
Mono rocks. I'd be happy to go there. Or the 13th Note - either is good.

The Falcon

Mono is an ace pub, and also traditional Barbemeet setting.

The salute for entry is as follows: raise left hand to right side of forehead, describe diagonal line to left side of chin, swiftly followed by right hand to left of forehead, describe diagonal to correponding side of chin. Thank you.

Axolotl
22:35 / 26.04.06
Shall we say either Mono then? Last time we went to the 13th Note, so we'll ring the changes.

Loomis
14:09 / 28.04.06
So are we on then? Sat 6th? Who's in?

Please sir, me!

Sounds like a plan.

19:07 / 29.04.06
Aye. I'm workin' but. Cannae make it any earlier than the back of seven, or mebbe eight. That too late? Any of the Edinburgh-loids (?) fancy gettin the train together or are ye all goin through earlier?

■
23:10 / 29.04.06
Going to have to give it a miss, I'm afraid. Very strapped right now, and I have a prior engagement.

Only 'too late' in the sense that we'll already be a bit drunk! But no, not too late at all, we'll no doubt be there till last train time.
As for the train, we'll probably go through for the afternoon, I'm afraid. Anyone else coming from Edinburgh?

Blake Head
16:21 / 01.05.06
I hope so. I was relying on cube to be our “enforcer” if the Glasgow mob start getting ideas above their station.

Anyway, yes, if I turn up at Mono as soon as I can after seven on Saturday I’ll still find a group of “cheerful” Barbeloids to have drinks with? No worries if you decide to get something to eat before I manage to get there.

Ariadne
18:47 / 02.05.06
So who have we got so far? Me, Loomis, Blakehead, iamus, Phyrephox ... Duncan? Toksik? Are you guys coming?

Do we have enough of us for 'critical mass' here -- or is there another date that would get more of us along?

The Falcon
18:57 / 02.05.06
Aye, I said to Loomis I should be down, yeah. Will try toksik & yawn onna text.

Ariadne
21:32 / 02.05.06
Excellent, just checking. Should be good fun. I'm already dreaming of a Mono burger.

Shih uhh, toksik. I was in the house with my GIRLFRIEND, alright. So I couldn't have been having a toss. And she was on the other phone. And my mobile has shit reception in the house.

You're such a dick.

*kicks hard-drive*

So, tomorrow's the day. We'll probably be there around 7ish. Need to get the last train at 11.30 so we want to get a reasonably early start on the boozing. If it's a nice day we'll probably get into town earlier and have a stroll about. I like to visit Kelvingrove Park most times I come through.

I've been practising the salute as well. I tried it with the Aussie flag but it gets a bit complicated so I gave that up.

I don't know about going to Glasgow. I'm scared of thunder and lightning. My Mum was in Airdrie and says it was a bit mental last night (actually, I don't think my Mum has ever said the words 'a bit mental', but you know what I mean).

Or maybe it's just Airdrie that was mental, and nothing to do with lightning.

Did you get power cuts and flash floods and fires breaking out everywhere?

The Falcon
10:48 / 05.05.06
Oh, it was mental weather, aye. My internets stayed on, but the cable tv was cutting inanout.

Airdrie is 'just mental', though, so I'm told. Also: Shotts, Coatbridge, Motherwell in descending order.

iamus
17:33 / 05.05.06
I think I'm the only one in Glasgow that missed it. In work when about six tables ordered their sweets at the same time, leaving me in the kitchen to fire out pavlovas while everybody else watched the lightning.

I think the building got struck. There was a big crack/explosion sound and our fire alarm went off. Buggered the phone systems too.

Harumph. Looks like I've been rota'd in to work tomorrow night now and I've not got much chance of dodging it. If I can get away early, I'll try my hardest to do so, but the chances of me getting to the pub for early drinking are none I'm afraid.

P'raps Duncan could come in and cause an "incident" that lets me slip out early?

Loomis
07:56 / 06.05.06
Shit! That's no good.

Didn't you know attendance is compulsory (like voting)?

nice to have met you all.

did anyone manage to get nick cage's autograph in the end?

iamus
19:34 / 08.05.06
That was a good wee night. Great to see you all again even if only for an hour or so. Sorry to have missed yawn, but them's the breaks I suppose. Maybe next time.

I also, by complete coincidence, ran into the other people I knew who had been in the Note, who then convinced me out to Barfly. I saw The Flying Matchstick Men, who I thought were really pretty good (even if the lead guy was a bit of a prick with shite banter). From there, the night turned into one of those seven in the morning jobbies. Good weekend all in all.

None planned as of yet, but that sounds like a rallying cry. I think the idea was to make the general wee meet-ups a bit more frequent.

Anyone up for low-key drinks any time soonish then?

Every Wednesday evening up at the Studioffice here, we have an informal private gathering of writers, cartoonists, alternauts and other likeable degenerates. Held in the top front room overlooking Central Station. From 6 to midnight...

Place reputed to have good vibes and you know you're all most welcome. Kettle's alway on.

That's a generous offer. Love to take you up on that some time soon.

I'd watch out though, we're a bunch of dodgy bastards. I mean, I'd steal your pencils as soon as look at you.

Jamie, you seem like a lovely fella, and I have to be nice to you because you've been so nice to me what with all your oh-so-pretty colours, but please stop signing your posts. We don't really do that here.
