Craigslist

I discovered the so-called marvelous entity called craigslist sometime late last year at the behest of my best friend. I was looking for three things: some furniture for my apartment, a copy of Kill Your Boyfriend (eBay was no help on that front), and a way to sell some more of my own useless crap.

What I got was this: an incredibly easy way to read the rantings of others, personal ads from all the world, and a certain sense of perverse voyeurism that I'm ashamed to say I enjoy.

I've been trying to use it more logically these days--y'know, being unemployed and all--but still I keep getting drawn into reading the definitely less important stuff. (I will say this, it is responsible for me dating a nice thus-far sane gentleman.)

Anyone else's thoughts on craig and his many many lists?

There are some very, very odd personal ads on there, and I mean that in a very tolerant way.

I personally like the "missed connections." It's amazing what random strangers notice. And what's even funnier is that you know the odds of the other person ever seeing it are almost remote.

It's such a user-friendly site. I've never used it, but now of people who swear by it.

I know. I can name tons of people I know who use this site for everything under the sun.

A couch? You got it. A forum about a local band? You're covered. Need a date? Just click here.

Oy.

I use craigslist as rarely as possible. My experience has been that habitual craigslist users are like people entangled in an unhealthy relationship. They talk about how wonderful CL is, how it can solve any problem, but eventually end up at best disappointed and at worst poorer.

My most common use of CL is to find people to chat with while I'm at work in the "strictly platonic" section.

I've used craigslist for a variety of things, including buying and/or selling pet supplies (crates), furniture, painting materials... also finding contractual job opportunities, hiring an assistant, and once an apartment sublet. I rarely just browse but when I do it's through the job listings or (lately) houses for sale just to see what's out there.

I've never gotten into the personal ad section. I mean, I've looked at it, but it didn't interest me much. There's only so much teeth-grindingly bad grammar and spelling I can wade through in an afternoon. Most of the stuff I find borderline incoherent or just banal. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough... it seems a bit like playing the slots or looking at internet porn - slogging through the uninteresting bits, fueled by the hope of hitting the jackpot?

Fair enough. But I don't read all of them; just the ones that sound too crazy or inane. I mean, I like to have a good laugh. At others' expenses, of course.

I am finding some very good job leads, though.

It's really best to stick to the Best-Of section.

There's gold in there.
