Well, I've heard of Area 51 and don't go in for Conspiracy Theories much, but has anyone heard anything about RAF Honington?
I got told something minor by a reliable source who is so damn cautious he doesn't want me to tell anyone over the internet unless I encrypt it (which I don't know how to do!) i've done a quick search on Google and can't find any Area 51 style hypothesises on the subject, so I'm wondering if you lot have any clues and if anyone is interested in the information?

Disappearing fast, the Stealth's reputation

It is the invisible destroyer - a bomber that can strike without being picked
up by radar.

At least, that was the theory.

But British scientists have blown a hole in the 2.2 billion dollar technology
behind the American Stealth bomber by claiming to have tracked it as it flew
over the Farnborough air show.

British missile manufacturers saw Monday's flypast as the ideal opportunity to
test their systems against the bomber - seen by many as the most advanced
aircraft in the world.

Experts operating a Rapier FSC system at RAF Honington in Suffolk managed the
feat and later provided video evidence to the Americans.

British Aerospace, which manufactures the Rapier, was jubilant and said it
proved how effective it was against all types of aircraft.

The Pentagon fired back, saying it had allowed the Stealth - known as the
USAF Northrop Gruman B2 Spirit - to be tracked for safety reasons and that it
could disappear off the screen again whenever it wanted.

However, some doubt was cast on the explanation by the fact that other British
systems had failed to track the plane.

The Rapier works by using infra-red systems to look for changed in heat in the
atmosphere. Although the B2 is supposed to be able to disguise its heat
emissions, sufficient traces must have remained for the Rapier to lock on.

Another listing of secret bases http://www.ufos-aliens.co.uk/cosmicarea51.html
lists two Honingtons -- one in Lincolnshire (a depot) and one in Suffolk ("nr Bury St Edmonds. Air Warfare Centre Surface-to-Air Weapons O.E.U.")

And Lexis gives this:
quote:The MoD official said that two other leaks of tritium occurred - at RAF Honington, Suffolk, on November 2, 1973, and RAF Waddington, Lincs, on August 13, 1975. The Sunday Telegraph has been unable to corroborate these incidents. It is not known how much tritium leaked in any of the four cases, but because the live bombs were in enclosed storage areas, any danger is likely to have been confined to Servicemen.

Interesting Grant- thankyou. Well, seen as someones shown some interest and there is already information in the pubic sphere I'm not going to get Tom into to trouble with this. ALLEDGEDLY, so I've heard, there are five nuclear weapons stores at RAF Honington, plus Delta52, a building like the 5 weapons stores (ie. built so that leaks can be contained) that is top secret. In two years of guarding this building no-one went in or out. Allegedly and this may be a wind up folks, if anyone were to enter the area the RAF police had orders to clear the whole site, ever single serviceman in the area would be sent away, possibly with instructions to go to the pub for a couple of days. But it didn't happen, in said two years. This building has the same thick walls and two or three lots of fences as the nuclear weapons (oopps, do you think that is a secret too?) Plus your friendly armed RAF police. Whats inside? Alledgedly when asked, senior officier replied "what would happen if all religion suddenly ended?", which is a cryptic thing to reply indeed. Caught my imagination. But your average RAF dude, would take that to mean, simply Not for you to know sonny Jim, shouldn't you be in the Gulf or something?

Tom, if you feel uncomfortable about this, please feel free to delete the thread.

Presumably, the phrase "holier than thou" would lose currency.

If I disappear mysteriously, you'll know why. In the meantime, I think we'll leave it just where it is...

I had lunch with a senior spy once. I meant to ask him all about this stuff and see whether he blinked, blushed, or whatever. Had a whole speech prepared. And I completely forgot to ask. For three hours. Got outside his office and thought "bugger!"

...

True story.

I've been badgering the information bearing person for more, as it seems highly unlikely so far. My memory was faulty on the religion bit- it was "What would happen if religion proved to be a lie?" Aparently the Commanding officer smirked as he said this.
The bunker is the size of a double garage with 3 fences around it, a microwave intruder alarm detection system and 32 armed policemen. If necessary 100 strong response unit can be there in 20 minutes, and if the site is attacked by terrorists the SAS will wipe the site - ie. kill everyone friend or foe. The cardinal security level as detailed above, is higher than the nuclear weapons that are also guarded at Honnington. On one occassion the alarm system was updated and the contents of Delta52 were moved to another bunker, in the middle of the night, without the onsite police being informed, or indeed even noticing. Sounds like a job for King Mob!

Its the one near Bury St.Edmonds, and the other RAF Honington on Grant's list doesn't exist- it must be a misspelling.

There's an RAF base at Honiton, I think.

It's boring, though.
